The Port Safety Officer reports to the Deputy Harbourmaster and is responsible for the day-to-day safety issues of Ports and Harbours Operations personnel and for ensuring safety inspections and audits are carried out.
The Main Duties Of The Port Safety Officer Include
* To undertake ship inspections alongside:
o Check visiting vessels are in compliance with all port and jetty safety regulations.
o Checking own vessels are, in addition, operating in compliance with departmental and SMS procedures and guidelines.
* To monitor and investigate deficiencies and dangerous occurrences concerning the safety of own and visiting vessels and ship’s personnel;
* Safety and Pollution incidents:
o Investigate safety and pollution incidents and, where appropriate, provide written reports that may be issued to external agencies such as the police, procurator-fiscal and Maritime and Coastguard Agency. These investigations may involve travel on land, sea or air.
o Participation in clean-up operations after a pollution incident. Note this is primarily in the role of Onsite Supervisor (MCA Level 3 Oil Spill Onsite Supervisor) and you will be required to drive Council vehicles to tow and deliver response equipment. As Onsite Supervisor you are responsible for on-site decision making, to be later confirmed with management.
o When suitably qualified, act as on-scene manager taking appropriate decisions as required.
o Liaise with environmental agencies and support services during an incident and feedback to senior management.
* Safety Management System:
o Assist in developing, updating and auditing the Safety Management System (SMS).
o Help ensure document control procedures are followed as described in the systems and report any deficiencies found and inform or suggest measures deemed necessary to remedy any such deficiencies.
o Obtain confirmation that any agreed remedial action has been taken and ensure that the paperwork is completed and closed out.

* Salary shown in the advert is baswed on 37 hour week and is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance of £2,859 per annum (pro rata)
* Permanent Full Time post for 42.0 Hours per Week (37 hours and 5 hours contracted overtime), 52.18 weeks per year
