Job Title: Data Engineer
Job Description
We are seeking a proactive Data Engineer with deep expertise in data management to own and stabilise a data ecosystem. This role is critical to transforming fragmented, unreliable data from multiple source systems into trusted, governed, analytics-ready datasets using medallion architecture principles (Bronze/Silver/Gold). This position requires a hands-on problem solver who takes initiative, investigates data issues at the source, collaborates with upstream system owners, and designs resilient data pipelines with strong data quality controls.
Responsibilities
1. Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines leveraging OneLake and medallion architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold layers).
2. Architect robust ingestion, transformation, and serving layers that support analytics, reporting, and downstream use cases.
3. Develop and optimise complex SQL/M-Query/Power Query-based transformations for performance, reliability, and maintainability.
4. Design and develop scalable semantic models that enable governed, self-service analytics and democratise access to trusted data across the organisation.
5. Own end-to-end pipeline reliability, from source system ingestion through curated datasets.
6. Design and implement data quality checks, validations, and reconciliation controls across all pipeline layers.
7. Proactively detect, troubleshoot, and resolve pipeline failures, especially those caused by upstream schema or data changes.
8. Build monitoring, alerting, and logging mechanisms to ensure data issues are identified early and resolved quickly.
9. Continuously improve pipeline resilience and reduce manual intervention.
10. Actively engage with source system owners, application teams, and business stakeholders to understand data issues and resolve root causes.
11. Take ownership of ambiguous or poorly defined data problems and drive them to resolution independently.
12. Implement and manage Row-Level Security (RLS) to ensure proper data access controls.
13. Apply data governance best practices including dataset certification, lineage, documentation, and access standards.
14. Ensure compliance with internal data security, privacy, and governance policies.
Essential Skills
15. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field (or equivalent experience).
16. 4+ years of hands-on experience as a Data Engineer, with at least 1–2 years working in data ecosystems.
17. Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills in complex, messy data environments.
18. Ability to work independently, take initiative, and drive issues to resolution without waiting for direction.
19. Hands-on experience with Fabric & OneLake in real projects.
20. Expertise in medallion architecture (Bronze/Silver/Gold).
21. Advanced skills in SQL/M-Query/Power Query for data transformation and optimisation.
22. experience in building and maintaining production-grade data pipelines (ingest → transform → serve).
23. Proficiency in handling broken or changing source data and implementing data quality checks.
24. Knowledge of data security and access controls, specifically Row-Level Security (RLS).
