Main duties of the job
The post holder will jointly provide high-quality secondary and/or tertiary gastroenterology services, enhancing our department’s subspecialties.
Responsibilities include outpatient clinics (specialist/general), endoscopy lists, inpatient care support, and providing specialist advice to primary and secondary care professionals. Ward cover is shared on a rotating 7-day consultant of the week basis. Participation in the out-of-hours GI bleed rota is also required.
Development of a subspecialty interest is encouraged, with support for continuous quality improvement. Consultants are expected to lead by example, fostering good relationships with staff, patients, and carers. Multidisciplinary teamwork is central to our ethos, aiming for excellent patient care.
Contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate education is expected. There are ample opportunities for research and development, with interests encouraged and supported.
The final job plan will be agreed upon appointment and may include flexible working or annualised sessions based on departmental needs.

Job responsibilities
* Maintain comprehensive clinical knowledge of gastroenterology
* Demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to patient assessment and care
* Supervise and teach junior medical staff, students, and other healthcare professionals
* Contribute to the development of specialist services (e.g., IBD, nutrition, upper GI, hepatology)
* Manage approximately 2-3 endoscopy sessions weekly
* Conduct approximately 2-3 outpatient clinics weekly
* Participate in inpatient gastroenterology/hepatology management rota
* Engage in the emergency GI bleed rota
* Provide specialist advice to colleagues in primary and secondary care
* Work according to established management guidelines

Qualifications
* Registered with the GMC
* Eligible for inclusion on the GMC specialist register in gastroenterology and general medicine or equivalent
