Role Overview: Selectamark Security Systems plc is seeking an experienced DNA & Forensic Scientist to take operational responsibility for our in-house forensic DNA laboratory. This is a hands-on scientific role within a UKAS-accredited SME environment, combining laboratory work, quality compliance, scientific advisory input and external stakeholder support. The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining the integrity of our forensic testing, supporting product development and acting as a trusted scientific authority within the business. The role would suit a scientist who is technically confident, commercially aware and comfortable working with a high degree of autonomy in a small, fast-moving organisation.
Key Responsibilities:
Forensic Testing & Laboratory Management
* Handle and process forensic DNA samples, including police evidence, in accordance with company SOPs
* Carry out DNA extraction, PCR and sequencing activities as required
* Manage the day-to-day operation of a small forensic laboratory
* Ensure accuracy, traceability and integrity of all testing activities
Quality, Accreditation & Compliance
* Operate within an ISO 17025-accredited testing environment
* Maintain compliance with UKAS requirements and the Forensic Science Regulator’s Code of Practice
* Support audits, documentation control and quality investigations as required
* Contribute to continuous improvement of laboratory and quality processes
Scientific Advisory & Internal Support
* Act as a scientific advisor to senior management
* Produce clear summaries of scientific, development and quality-related work
* Work closely with Production and Marketing teams to support products and technical communications
* Translate complex scientific concepts into clear, practical guidance for non-scientists
Research, Development & External Collaboration
* Assess feasibility of new product and development requests
* Work with external contract laboratories and overseas forensic partners
* Support inter-laboratory comparisons and external validation activities
* Provide scientific input to R&D initiatives across the business
Police, Distributors & External Stakeholders
* Support UK police forces and scenes of crime officers with scientific advice when required
* Assist overseas police authorities and distributors with technical and regulatory queries
* Attend relevant UK scientific and forensic conferences and events
Skills, Knowledge & Experience:
Essential
* Degree (BSc minimum; MSc preferred) in Biology, Biomedical Science, Genetics, Forensic Science, Biomolecular or Analytical Chemistry, or similar
* or equivalent industry laboratory experience (minimum 5 years)
* Strong practical experience in molecular biology techniques, including:
DNA extraction
PCR
DNA sequencing (including Sanger sequencing)
* Experience working in a laboratory environment with defined quality systems
* Ability to work independently and take ownership of scientific decisions
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Strong organisational and time-management skills
* High level of IT and documentation capability
Desirable
* Experience within forensic science or accredited testing environments
* Working knowledge of ISO 17025, GLP and/or quality management systems
* Research experience or involvement in product development
* Commercial awareness and understanding of forensic market demands
Other Requirements
* Based in London / South East, ideally within reasonable commuting distance of Orpington
* Fluent spoken and written English
* Right to work in the UK (sponsorship not available)
* Willingness to undergo BS7858 security vetting or other role-specific vetting
