Environment Agency job opportunity

Overview

Do you want to work for an organisation that values difference and includes everyone? The Environment Agency is committed to being an inclusive employer and ensuring equal opportunities for everyone. We welcome flexible working patterns for all vacancies, including job share.

We are seeking a Manager to lead our Economic Crime Unit (ECU), part of the National Environmental Crime Unit (NECU). The successful candidate will lead a specialist team dedicated to removing the financial benefit from criminals. You will be the strategic lead for the way we manage financial investigations under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) and will continually improve how we work.

Responsibilities

* Lead the Economic Crime Unit (ECU), the Asset Denial Team and the Money Laundering Investigations Team, and manage a Senior Financial Intelligence Officer.
* Provide strong leadership, motivate and develop your team, and manage performance and work delivery.
* Collaborate with internal teams (Investigatory Teams, Intelligence & Partnerships, Legal) and external partners (Police, National Crime Agency, HMRC). Influence at senior levels to support EA priorities.
* Support the wider organisation in understanding POCA, share lessons learned, contribute to technical documentation, and advise enforcement officers across the country.
* Work with a nationally dispersed team and deal with serious and complex criminality involving organised crime networks.

Team

The ECU comprises two teams – the Asset Denial Team and the Money Laundering Investigations Team. These teams include Financial Investigators, Financial Intelligence Officers and Crime Analysts.

Experience and Skills

* Exceptional leadership skills, ideally with experience leading a dispersed team.
* Strong understanding of financial investigations and the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA).
* Experience in law enforcement settings and an understanding of the National Intelligence Model.
* Effective communication, including delivering feedback, managing performance and building relationships with external stakeholders.
* Ability to work under pressure, prioritise a varied workload, identify areas for improvement, and lead changes to working practices.
* Experience developing and enhancing the capability of a team and individuals within it.

Other information

This is a hybrid role with flexible working from home and your nearest office. Travel across the country for meetings and operational duties may be required. Incident response is part of the role, and you may be required to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident (this may attract an additional payment). Training and workplace adjustments are available to support you.

Interviews will take place w/c 3 November 2025. For further information, please contact Emma Viner, Enforcement & Investigations Manager – emma.viner@environment-agency.gov.uk.

We are committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce and welcome flexible working patterns, including job share. Please indicate your preferred working arrangements in your application.

Guaranteed Interview Policy: We guarantee an interview to anyone with a disability whose application meets the minimum criteria for the post.

Notes: The Environment Agency is not part of HM Civil Service. Some redundancy and service rules apply for local government or other bodies as described in the Redundancy Payments (Continuity of Employment in Local Government etc) Order 1999. Please consult your HR team if unsure of your status. We do not engage market directly via post, email or phone calls; see GOV.UK for supplier information.

Artificial intelligence and applications: AI can support your application, but all examples must be truthful and taken from your own experience. Plagiarism may lead to withdrawal of the application. The Environment Agency aligns with Civil Service guidance on appropriate AI use.
