Exciting Opportunity – Band 3 HCA Position in SDEC, YGC

We are pleased to offer a rare and exciting opportunity for a Band 3 Healthcare Assistant to join the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) team at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd.

Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) is a modern approach to delivering urgent care that allows patients to be assessed, diagnosed, treated, and discharged on the same day—without the need for hospital admission. Operating within acute hospital settings, SDEC units aim to reduce pressure on emergency departments and inpatient wards by providing timely care for patients with conditions that can be safely managed in a short timeframe.

SDEC services typically run seven days a week and are staffed by a multidisciplinary team including doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants, and allied health professionals. Patients are referred from the Emergency Department, GP, or other clinical areas and receive rapid access to diagnostics, treatment, and specialist input.

The focus is on delivering high-quality, person-centred care while improving patient flow, reducing hospital stays, and enhancing overall patient experience.

Main duties of the job

Patient Care & Support: Providing personal care such as dressing, oral hygiene, toileting, and mobility assistance while maintaining dignity and privacy.

Infection Prevention: Upholding high standards of infection control through effective hand hygiene, environmental cleanliness, and equipment care.

Nutrition & Hydration: Assisting patients with eating and drinking, offering appropriate choices, and supporting independence where possible.

Monitoring & Reporting: Recording vital signs (e.g. temperature, blood pressure, oxygen saturation), calculating BMI, and documenting nutrition and hydration status. All findings must be reported to the registered professional.

Diagnostic Support: Performing Point of Care testing (e.g. urinalysis, blood glucose), collecting diagnostic samples (e.g. urine, faeces, sputum, wound swabs, venous blood), and ensuring proper handling and infection control compliance.

Pressure Area Care: Providing pressure relief as directed and reporting any abnormalities in skin condition.

Compassionate Care: Demonstrating empathy and advocacy for patients, carers, and families, promoting independence and therapeutic engagement.

Documentation: Maintaining accurate and timely records in line with clinical standards.

Communications: Provide appropriate routine information effectively to patients, carers and other staff.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and /or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
