JOB DESCRIPTION: Junior Building Services Engineer
DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Building Services division supports the design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems across the MJ Quinn project delivery portfolio. The team ensures safe, efficient, and compliant delivery of building services engineering solutions
JOB OBJECTIVE
To support senior engineers in the design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of building services systems, while developing technical skills and contributing to safe, efficient, and compliant project delivery
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist in the design and specification of building services systems including HVAC, electrical distribution, lighting, fire safety, and plumbing.
Produce and update technical drawings, schematics, and layouts under supervision.
Support engineering calculations such as heat loss/gain, ventilation rates, cable sizing, and load assessments.
Help review technical documents, design reports, and equipment schedules.
Attend site visits to observe installations and assist with inspections.
Record site observations and report issues to senior engineers.
Support the verification of contractor work against design specifications and quality standards.
Assist with commissioning activities including functional testing and system performance checks.
Help maintain site documentation including inspection records and snagging lists.
Maintain organised project files, drawings, and revision records.
Assist in compiling O&M manuals, asset registers, and handover documentation.
Actively develop technical knowledge of building services systems and engineering principles.
Participate in training, CPD activities, and mentoring sessions.
Work towards professional accreditation with guidance.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Qualifications & Experience
Degree, HNC/HND, or apprenticeship in Building Services Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
Basic understanding of engineering principles and building services systems.
Interest in sustainability, energy efficiency, and modern building technologies.
Previous industry experience desirable.
Skills & Competencies
Willingness to learn and develop technical skills.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Good communication and teamwork abilities.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings (with support).
Problem-solving mindset and proactive approach.
Basic proficiency in CAD and engineering software (desirable).
