Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Lecturer Facilitator to join the Velindre Oncology Academy. The post holder will contribute to the teaching and delivery of post‑registration and postgraduate programmes, bespoke courses and study days, both face‑to‑face and via virtual learning platforms. You will lead and coordinate modules, support student learning and assessment, and contribute to academic planning, research, scholarship and clinical practice development. The role supports the Academy’s strategic vision to enhance cancer care through high‑quality, innovative education

This post is fixed term/secondment for 12 months to meet the needs of the service.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will design, deliver and coordinate teaching across a range of oncology‑related programmes, using innovative and inclusive learning approaches. You will act as a module and course leader, providing academic supervision, assessment and timely feedback, as well as pastoral support to learners.

You will mentor junior staff, participate in quality assurance and peer review processes, and contribute to curriculum development and academic planning. The role includes engagement in research and scholarly activity, evaluation of educational initiatives and promotion of evidence‑based practice. You will work collaboratively with internal teams, higher education partners and external stakeholders to support workforce development and respond to local and national education agendas.

Communication & Relationship Skills

To utilise communication skills and influence to enable teams within Velindre Cancer Centre to consolidate their skills and knowledge gained experientially and through structured/formal development programmes.
To liaise with all staff groups to develop inter-professional education and learning.
Develop and maintain links with local Higher and Further Education providers in order to influence the planning, and support delivery, of related pre/post qualification courses where appropriate.
To promote an integrated team approach to education & development.
To develop effective communication links between stakeholders within the locality to integrate new ways of working.
To encourage best practice and liaise with the local/ national and international education and training strategy groups.
Maintain an active involvement in Trust initiatives working as part of the Trust training team.
To demonstrate robust leadership skills, and act as a role model.
Provide and receive highly complex and sensitive or highly contentious information, where there may be significant barriers to acceptance with both internal and external partners requiring the highest level or interpersonal communication and delicate/personal information.
Freedom to act as required to interpret overall health service and education policies and strategy in order to establish goals and standards.

Education

· Designing and delivering specific teaching sessions and study days both in the classroom and through e-learning using a range of appropriate teaching strategies to suit the level of learners, the setting, and the topic, including technology-enhanced and experiential learning, large and small group teaching, seminars, and simulation of clinical situations.

· Participating in the development of teaching in the Academy, sharing and reflecting on ideas and experiences; mentoring colleagues; evaluating teaching activity and outcomes.

· Participating in Peer Review of teaching, receiving, and giving supportive feedback and advice to help sustain and enhance the quality of teaching in the Academy.

· Being involved in the evaluation of teaching and learning activities, ensuring that education and practice are linked.

· Provide academic leadership and support to course / curriculum development and delivery.

· Being an academic supervisor of students undertaking modules.

· Marking of assignments and other forms of assessments in a timely way.

· Contributing to developments and initiatives within the Academy such as academic planning, innovation, and bespoke project work.

· Participating in the Academy quality assurance processes

· Be an active member of the Academy Senior Leadership Team.

· Mentoring junior staff to support their development of skills in teaching and assessing.

· Acting as a personal tutor to those registered on courses, supporting, and monitoring their academic development and giving personal support as required.

· Act as a module/course leader for various modules.

· Overseeing and co-ordinating the planning and delivery of specific modules during the academic year.

· Providing Course Leadership.

· Identifying appropriate teaching and assessment strategies to deliver the learning outcomes for the module/course.

· Planning a creative and varied timetable to ensure students’ different learning styles are catered for.

· Sourcing appropriate internal and external expertise to contribute to the curriculum.

· Providing academic and pastoral support for those who study at the Academy.

· Providing support for associate lecturers and guest experts.

· Building and maintaining effective relationships with learners, colleagues and visiting speakers.

· Assessing and providing timely, constructive formative feedback for learners to support their academic progress and development.

· Providing pastoral care to learners if necessary and identifying appropriate support as required.

· Assessing and marking summative assignments within the timescales required and providing constructive advice to enhance the development of academic skills and application of knowledge to clinical practice.

· Leading the review, evaluation / audit of each module and/or courses.

· Respond to local and national agendas of education, health and public reform.

· In partnership with education and workforce leads, manage and allocate the commissioned funding of advanced practice in line with HEIW requirements.

Research Activity

· Actively engage in scholarly activities e.g., research, writing publications, presenting, and facilitating workshops at local, national, and international conferences and study days.

· Contribute to new and on-going evaluation of education and projects in the Academy.

· Influence best practice on a national and international level through membership of regional, national, and international networks (e.g., National Forums, European Associations), according to areas of expertise / interest.

· Evaluate and disseminate good practice in relation to education and development across the service and encourage publication of work.

Clinical & Practice Development

· Maintain and develop personal clinical expertise, credibility, and professional development in line with requirements of relevant professional body.

· Establish a role linked to an area of clinical practice, according to experience and expertise, and maintain regular contact with colleagues working in that area of clinical practice to influence service/practice development and help link theory to practice.

· Promote research / evidenced based practice.

· Lead and coordinate / participate in Trust –wide developments according to areas of specialist knowledge.

· Undertake training needs analysis for the clinical workforce to inform the Academy and workforce and development in order to implement strategies that ensure an appropriately skilled workforce.

· Interpret national policies and guidelines, incorporating these into local practice education and training policies, procedures and protocols.

Personal Professional Development

· Attend conferences, seminars, and study days to remain updated in areas of specialist expertise or interest.

· Maintain contemporary, relevant knowledge base through study of educational and cancer related publications and resources.

· Participate in national health-related educational activities/groups and attend educational conferences and seminars.

· Attend Trust-wide mandatory updates as required.

· Act as a positive lifelong learning role model.

Qualifications & Knowledge


Essential criteria

* Registered Health Care Professional
* MSc /MA in an appropriate subject.
* Knowledge/experience of teaching in a variety of settings.
* Knowledge of research methods and processes. Current knowledge of health/education policies/standards.
* Current knowledge of care of individuals with cancer.


Desirable criteria

* Post- graduate teaching qualification


Experience


Essential criteria

* Post registration experience in a relevant clinical setting.
* Experience of clinical leadership role during career.
* Experience of teaching in Higher Education or Clinical Practice setting.


Desirable criteria

* Advanced Communication skills training.
* Experience of research and scholarship activity/project management related to education and/or cancer care.
