Job Title: Mechanical Engineer - NHS Estates
To manage and support the provision and maintenance of NHS (National Health Service) Estates buildings, mechanical and specialist services, plant and equipment to ensure a safe and suitable environment for the care of patients, visitors, and staff.
Provide technical and specialist advice to managers and staff in mechanical and electrical systems and disciplines.
Specify and manage all mechanical services, systems, and contracts across multiple sites. Travel between Trust sites as required.
Ensure all hospital mechanical engineering systems are maintained in a safe condition and are fit for purpose. Provide evidence-based, cost-effective, and robust mechanical and specialist engineering contracts to ensure full compliance with statutory instruments, Department of Health guidance, and industry best practices.
This role involves access to vulnerable people and is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020. A Disclosure Check will be required.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
1. Good general education plus a recognised diploma level (HNC/HND) in Building Services/Mechanical Engineering/Construction or equivalent training.
2. Degree in Building Services/Mechanical Engineering/Construction or equivalent experience.
3. Post-graduate qualifications or equivalent in building/construction/estates related disciplines.
4. Structured engineering training for at least five years.
5. Valid full driving licence.
Desirable Skills and Qualifications:
1. Training in Health & Safety (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH, First Aid).
2. Membership of relevant professional bodies (e.g., IHEEM, HEFMA, CIBSE, IET, CIOB).
3. Experience with HTM standards, managing engineering building services, operational maintenance, and contracts.
4. Operational budget management and contractor management experience.
5. Knowledge of legislation related to estates management.
6. Excellent communication skills, computer literacy, and experience with BMS and CAFM systems.
7. Experience managing multiple projects and teams.
