Payments and Consumer Credit Lawyer – Nottingham, UK

Capital One is excited to offer an experienced solicitor a role within the UK Legal Team to lead on supporting the business across payments, consumer credit and open banking.

About this role

This position sits within the Legal Customer Acquisition Strategy and Operations Team to navigate risk, deliver on strategy and provide good customer outcomes during a period of rapid innovation across payments and lending. Knowledge of the industry and the ability to adapt quickly will be essential.

Reporting to the Head of Legal Customer Acquisition Strategy and Operations, you will lead a small team and provide legal advice to our operational lending, financial support and payments teams, partnering with other senior lawyers and stakeholders across legal, external affairs and compliance.

What you’ll do

* Advise stakeholders across the business on legal and regulatory requirements impacting a consumer credit business, particularly in relation to payments, open banking and consumer duty.
* Build strong partnerships across our Operations, Lending and Customer Engagement teams, understanding business strategy and supporting navigation of risks and opportunities arising from the external legal and regulatory environment.
* Partner with internal teams to undertake horizon scanning, document legal requirements and provide training where necessary.
* Lead people management, overseeing a small team of lawyers who are SMEs in various aspects of a consumer credit business including lending customers in financial difficulty and complaints.
* Instruct and manage input from outside counsel where needed.
* Own your own development and support the development of others through feedback, coaching and mentoring.

What we’re looking for

* Qualified solicitor with experience working within or with an established financial‑services firm offering consumer credit products.
* Detailed knowledge of and experience navigating payments and open banking legal and regulatory requirements.
* Experience advising in the context of consumer duty.
* Experience interacting with UK regulators, particularly FCA, preferred.
* In‑house experience is preferred but not essential.
* People‑management experience.
* Strong strategic thinking, problem‑solving and workload‑management skills for a fast‑paced environment.
* Excellent written and verbal communication tailored to audience.
* Proven track record of delivery with a results focus.
* Relationship‑building and teamwork across supplier‑sourcing managers, broader Legal department and multi‑functional teams.
* Forward‑thinking digital strategy for legal advice and contract drafting.
* Genuine focus on delivering a best‑in‑class legal service.

Where and how you’ll work

This is a permanent position. You can be based in our Nottingham or London office.

We have a hybrid model: office 3 days a week (Tues‑Thur) and work‑from‑home Monday/Friday. Flexible arrangements are possible.

What’s in it for you

* Rewarding role contributing to a transformation roadmap.
* Strong, diverse career progression and development through Capital One University training programmes.
* Core benefits: pension scheme, bonus, generous holiday, private medical insurance and flexible benefits such as season‑ticket loans, cycle‑to‑work and enhanced parental leave.
* Well‑designed open‑plan workspaces; Nottingham head‑office offers gym, subsidised restaurant, mindfulness spaces; London office includes rooftop track and café.
