Consultant in Anaesthetics
Closing date: 12 May 2026.
We are looking for a Consultant Anaesthetist to join Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This substantive appointment ensures continuous delivery of services across multiple acute sites.
Main duties of the job
* Independently and safely conduct anaesthesia for a range of surgical specialties across any of the sites supported by GHNHSFT to the standard expected of a Consultant Anaesthetist.
* Support resident doctors both during planned care and whilst on‑call.
* Participate in a 1:16 non‑resident on‑call rota.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
* Able to contribute to the on‑call consultant rota and act as final clinical decision maker.
* Must hold a CCT or recognised equivalent in anaesthesia (anticipated before start date or within 6 months).
* Experienced with on‑call responsibilities and patient care across multiple sites.
Qualifications
* CCT or CESR (or Royal College of Anaesthetists recognised) equivalent in Anaesthesia (within 6 months).
* Full GMC registration with licence to practice, on specialist register (or reasonably expect to be on the register at start date).
* MBBS/MBChB or equivalent.
* FRCA or equivalent.
* Advanced Life Support (ALS).
* Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS)/PALS.
* PROMPT Maternity.
Clinical Experience
* General training leading to CCT in anaesthesia or other specialty.
* Experience in pre‑assessment clinics.
* Experience as on‑call anaesthetist at consultant level.
* Experience in obstetric anaesthesia.
Personal attributes
* Enthusiasm for the speciality of general anaesthesia.
* Attitudes compatible with the aims and objectives of the existing team and the Trust.
* Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
* Ability to show initiative and enthusiasm and work under stress; flexibility, able to adapt to changing circumstances.
* Ability to self‑motivate.
* Flexibility and willingness to share clinical responsibility for patients.
* Ability to assess and manage risk.
Knowledge and skills
* Communication skills, written and verbal.
* Publications and presentations relevant to Anaesthetics and Intensive Care in peer‑reviewed journals.
* Experience within change management projects.
* Evidence of completed audit cycles and/or quality improvement projects.
