We’re looking for an experienced countryside leader with a caring approach to people management and a passion for working in partnerships to lead our ranger teams which look after our stunning estates across South Cumbria and Lancashire. You will be a nature conservation expert that can lead and inspire a team of 12 rangers and 150 volunteers working from bases at Sizergh, Silverdale, Sandscale Haws, Gawthorpe and Holcombe Moor. No two days will be the same, and you will need to be prepared to travel across Cumbria and Lancashire working in a hybrid way from a variety of National Trust offices.
The role will largely be working core hours 0900-1700 Monday to Friday with some flexible evening meetings and weekend working.
What it's like to work here
The unique nature of this role is its breadth and variety; you’ll be working in special buildings and places which have been gifted to the nation for us to look after for everyone for ever. You'll spend most of your time at Sizergh which is the key hub for the portfolio, with weekly visits to our satellite ranger bases to support staff, meet with partners, and make conservation and access projects happen on the ground. You’ll be a key member of the Portfolio Leadership Team, supporting the General Manager to deliver an ambitious plan which will focus on improving access for all, and restoring nature.
What you'll be doing
First and foremost, this is a people leadership role for someone with a track record of kind, caring and inspiring leadership. You’ll be responsible for making sure we are safe and compliant, whilst working in accordance with the National Trust values and behaviours. Restoring nature is at the heart of everything we do in our estates, this is a diplomatic role with a wide range of partnership working across our places for a networker who loves creating lasting and authentic relationships. You’ll be thinking strategically to develop long term plans to use our resources carefully. We’re proud of our financial track record in the countryside and this role will ensure close budget management and a track record in securing and monitoring external funding sources. You’ll be responsible for making projects happen is vital to both lead on project development and coach team members.
