Job Summary
This post will be set in the rapidly expanding respiratory department of this large teaching hospital. Fellows will be an integral part of the lung cancer team supported by five consultants, 2 interventional fellows (THIS POST), patient navigator, specialty nurses and an excellent administrative team. We are in the process of developing a new system that meets the National Optimal Lung Cancer Pathway (NOLCP), with access to same day radiograph and CT scans, and subsequent same day clinic and diagnostic sampling. There is a high volume of outpatient referrals and over 400 cases of lung cancer diagnosed each year. Fellows would be expected to attend NOLCP clinics, prepare and be a key contributor of the multidisciplinary meetings. In total there would be 2.5 clinics per week and an assigned number of bronchoscopy lists and inpatient specialty referrals (supervised depending on their level of competence).
Main duties of the job
Candidates require RCR level 1 thoracic ultrasound certification and must be competent in standard flexible bronchoscopy. Fellows will teach and assist in procedures to give foundation doctors, core trainees and pre‑RCR level 1 respiratory specialty trainees necessary opportunities in pleural procedures. Expected activities include completion of relevant BTS national audits, participation in patient recruitment to multi‑centred national pleural disease trials and development of a research portfolio through observational and retrospective studies. Involvement in teaching Plymouth University Medical students, organising small group teaching, bedside teaching, assessments and examinations is required. Fellows may propose a special study unit for medical students in a relevant area such as lung cancer or pleural disease.
