About this role
Capital One is seeking a Software Engineering Manager to join our London office. The ideal candidate will have experience leading a Software Engineering team and be passionate about both people and technical leadership.
What you’ll do
1. Lead your team effectively: Coach and nurture engineers, positively impacting their careers and the business.
2. Provide technical guidance: Stay engaged with your team’s work, set high engineering standards, understand technical risks, and influence architecture decisions.
3. Clarify purpose and context: Ensure your team understands the 'why' behind their work and foster a positive culture.
4. Manage delivery processes: Collaborate with Product Owners and Change Delivery Leads to shape roadmaps and deliver high-quality software in a complex regulatory environment.
5. Oversee business applications: Keep applications well-managed and compliant with business standards.
6. Represent the business: Advocate for the business interests and help improve the environment beyond your immediate team.
What we’re looking for
An approachable, inquisitive problem solver with a focus on the 'why', passionate about growing people, nurturing culture, and leading technical delivery in a complex, regulated environment.
* Experience leading teams, developing engineers, and managing conflicts constructively.
* Background as an experienced software engineer familiar with technology, architecture, and trade-offs.
* Experience with Java, Spring, AWS, and advocating for continuous feedback, automated testing, CI/CD, and frequent releases.
* Self-reflective with a bias for action.
* Strong ownership and communication skills.
* Drive to make a positive, proactive impact.

Work location and flexibility
This is a permanent role based in London with a hybrid working model—working from the office three days a week (Tues, Wed, Thu).
