Overview of Department
Purpose of Role
The role will lead a delivery stream aligned engineering team with responsibility for providing and managing the technical platform required for Application Development teams to deliver and run business systems efficiently.
The focus of the role is to ensure the technical estate and skill set of the relevant delivery stream stay in line with departmental strategy and that delivery teams are working efficiently using best practice delivery approaches.
Responsibilities
As a Principal DevOps Engineer, you can expect to be involved and responsible for the following activities, not restricted to:
* Work with other groups within the department such as the Developer Community, Architecture, Central Platform Engineering, and other delivery stream engineering teams to embed existing standards and contribute to their evolution.
* Ensure delivery stream teams are making good use of available tooling and platform elements and aid in upskilling and maintaining their level of knowledge in relevant platform tools and modern development practices with a focus on productivity and efficiency.
* Manage delivery stream technical life-cycling and ensure our development platform remains supported, capable, and evergreen.
* Help the delivery teams design and deliver systems that meet the required Non-Functional Requirements for each tech stack and project. This should emphasise reliability, robustness, and maintainability.
* Assist delivery teams in diagnosing and correcting platform and tooling issues, collaborating with the Central Platforms team as necessary.
* Deliver software infrastructure and tooling to delivery projects, defining and evolving best practices as necessary, and ensuring these learnings are shared with other engineering teams.
* Ensure reporting is in place and managed to monitor adoption, cost, performance, reliability, etc., for delivery stream applications.
* Engage with the wider Industry DevOps community through networking events and forums.
* Manage the relevant team including:
* Clear and appropriate apportionment of responsibilities and resources.
* Management of staff including training, development, and appraisals.
* The above is partly satisfied by clear delegation of staff management responsibilities to the relevant individuals (if appropriate).
Your Knowledge and Experience:
Strong knowledge and experience required of:
* CI/CD,
* Kubernetes,
* Azure DevOps,
* Pipelines,
* Application Security,
* Cloud Services and capabilities.

Besides the technical knowledge required for the role, the experience and skills most essential are focused on collaboration, teamwork, communication, and training.
It is essential that the principal engineer can effectively up-skill their team members and the development teams in their stream, as well as communicate effectively with the Central Platforms teams and wider engineering community. As such, you will be a natural communicator, you will find building rapport with a range of stakeholders and colleagues comes to you with ease and that you enjoy developing colleagues, coaching them and supporting their training needs.
