Café Assistant

Location: Rotherham

Salary: £23,850 per annum (For 37.5 hrs FTE)

Vacancy Type: Permanent, Full Time, 40 hours per week

The Hospice is a charity committed to the people of Rotherham, offering specialist palliative and end of life cancer care to their community since 1996.

The Role

At the Hospice, the café spaces are more than just places to grab a coffee, they are community hubs where staff, patients, families, and supporters come together.

As a Café Assistant, you play a key role in creating a warm, welcoming, and supportive environment, ensuring every visitor experiences kindness and excellent service. In line with their Living Life’s Wishes strategy, this role is about more than food and drink, it’s about making every moment meaningful for those who need them.

Key Responsibilities

Food & Drink Service:

* Prepare and serve food and beverages, ensuring high-quality presentation.
* Operate the till, handle cash and card payments, and maintain accurate records.
* Follow all food safety and hygiene protocols.
* Assist in setting up and closing down the café, ensuring cleanliness and readiness.

Customer Service & Engagement:

* Provide friendly, welcoming, and efficient service to all customers.
* Be knowledgeable about menu items and assist customers with any dietary requirements or allergens.
* Support hospice fundraising efforts by engaging with customers about initiatives where appropriate.

Food Safety & Hygiene:

* Adhere to Level 2 Food Safety in Catering requirements.
* Follow HACCP procedures and maintain food temperature logs.
* Assist in allergen management by following supervisor-led allergen procedures and communicating dietary information to customers.
* Assist in stock rotation and monitor use-by dates.
* Ensure all areas of the café meet hygiene and cleanliness standards.

Teamwork & Support:

* Work closely with the Café Supervisor to ensure smooth daily operations.
* Support volunteers and new team members with guidance and encouragement.
* Assist in training and supporting volunteers in daily café operations.
* Assist with stock management and reporting any shortages.

Skills and Qualifications

* Previous experience in a café, hospitality, or customer service environment.
* Level 2 Food Safety in Catering (or willingness to obtain before starting).
* Friendly, approachable, and able to work well with the public.
* Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards.
* Basic numeracy skills for cash handling and stock monitoring.
* A warm, friendly, and approachable nature.
* Strong communication skills and the ability to engage with people from all walks of life.
* A commitment to maintaining high standards of hygiene and food safety.
* A team player who is willing to support colleagues and volunteers.
* The ability to remain calm under pressure and manage busy periods efficiently.
