Consultant Medical Microbiologist or Consultant Microbiologist with Infectious Diseases

Applicants must have full GMC Registration, a license to practise and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Portfolio Pathway (formerly known as CESR - Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) route doctors are only eligible to apply for a substantive consultant post once it has been awarded. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.
Applicants are welcome to join a multi-disciplinary team of Consultants providing an infection service covering the whole of Lothian.
Our goal is to make the best use of available expertise in the management of infection for optimal patient care in our region. To achieve this, we aim to develop multi-disciplinary teams comprising colleagues with specialist knowledge in microbiology, virology, infectious diseases, and infection prevention and control at each of our base hospitals.
The post holder will play a significant role in the clinical infection diagnostic team at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Western General Hospital, including providing specialist infection advice for critical care, orthopaedic, and other surgical specialties, delivering infection liaison services, and antimicrobial stewardship.
We have excellent working relationships with clinical teams and ongoing collaboration with researchers in Edinburgh and beyond.
The Lothian Microbiology service includes five Scottish reference laboratories, dealing with Mycobacteria, STEC, Bacterial Sexually-Transmitted Infections, Human Papilloma Virus, and Viral Hemorrhagic Fever, as well as Specialist Virology services. The laboratories are fully UKAS ISO 15189:2022 accredited.
The post-holder should have a CCT in Microbiology or Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, or be within 6 months of achieving this at the interview date. On-call is 1:8 pro-rata with prospective cover and a 5% availability supplement.
This is a full-time position, but part-time or job-share applicants will be considered.
