Brief Description
Central Route sits at the heart of Britain's railway network, covering critical commuter and freight lines in and out of Birmingham. It includes the Chiltern Main Line, the Snow Hill line, the Cross City line, and connections to cities such as Wolverhampton, Coventry, Walsall, and Oxford. Central Route is home to Birmingham New Street station, the busiest outside of London, with over 170,000 passengers daily. This route plays a vital role in supporting the UK's economy and connecting communities.

About The Role (External)
As a Technician [Off Track], you will provide support to the Team Leader to organise and motivate the team so that work is undertaken safely, efficiently and to the relevant standards. You'll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users. As a Technician [Off Track], you'll be responsible for maintaining, inspecting and repairing the land alongside the track network to keep the railway safe and efficient. This includes vegetation management, drainage and ancillary structures.
Within Off Track we cover three main work types this includes;
Vegetation Management;
* All aspects of tree work including climbing and felling
* Maintaining flail strip using various equipment; on track plant with flail and sidecutter, brushcutter, hedge cutter and chainsaw
* Managing areas of biodiversity, SSSIs and wildlife habitats
* Working alongside an area with outstanding natural beauty
Drainage;
* Work involving all on track drainage systems which we use on track plant to maintain including jetter and sucker
* Off Track drainage ie ditches, culverts keeping these clear of vegetation and often using a mini digger
Fencing;
* Maintaining our boundaries with neighbouring land
* Emergency fencing jobs ie animal incursions
* Renewal of fencing sites
Our Technicians work outside in all conditions, at all times of the year, day, or night. You'll be involved in demanding manual work, often with the need to transport kit, across tricky terrain. Being safety focused, respectful of rules and a team player will be critical as you'll often be working next to moving trains travelling at high speed.
You maybe asked from time to time, to deputise for the Team Leader.
Please note you will be based out of our Saltley Depot.
In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have…
* Experience of arranging and implementing safe systems of work.
* Knowledge of how to organise and control the safe and efficient delivery of work.
* Able to demonstrate, promote and embed safe working behaviours within the team.
* Able to lead, motivate and direct a team.
* Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
* Knowledge of permanent way inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal techniques.
* Conversant with standards, procedures and instructions.
* Hold and retain competencies relevant to this post, required by business need.
* Ideally hold (or be working towards) an NVQ level 1 or 2 (or equivalent) in a relevant subject or have attained an appropriate level of knowledge through equivalent relevant experience.
* Able and willing to drive vehicles as required by business need.
