Job overview

Clinical/Counselling Psychologist role at Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust (CNWL). This is a fixed-term maternity position for 12 months. HCPC registration is required. CNWL supports leadership development for psychological professions staff and encourages involvement in leadership opportunities within the Trust.


Main duties / responsibilities

* Provide specialist psychological/therapeutic assessments of service-users referred to the Therapies pathway, including interpretation and integration of complex data from various sources, using routine psychometric assessments, observations and interviews where appropriate.
* Exercise autonomous professional responsibility for formulation and implementation of plans for formal psychological treatment and/or management of a client’s problems, based on an appropriate conceptual understanding of the service-user’s problems in the context of the family and wider system.
* Receive regular specialist supervision from the principal clinical psychologist and, where appropriate, other senior professional colleagues.
* Develop skills in professional post-graduate teaching, training and supervision.


Professional setting and collaboration

The Therapies pathway works closely with colleagues across the wider MDT and involves consultation, training and liaison across the Hub. The role includes opportunities to develop leadership skills, supervision of Assistant Psychologists, Clinical Associates in Psychology or junior colleagues, and collaboration with lived experience practitioners.


Person specification

Qualifications & Experience


Essential criteria

* Doctoral level training in clinical/counselling psychology, including models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuro-psychology, and two or more distinct psychological therapies development psychology as accredited by the BPS.
* OR a registered qualification in healthcare at graduate level in nursing, social work or allied health profession plus post-graduate qualification (diploma equivalent) e.g., cognitive behaviour therapy.
* Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) or equivalent (e.g., BACP).
* Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology.

Experience


Essential criteria

* Experience of specialist psychological assessment and formulation of complex mental health presentations including trauma.
* Experience of working psychologically with people who have complex mental health problems, including trauma and personality disorder.
* Experience of teaching, training and supervision.
* Experience of skills in group work.
* Experience of working with carers/families and ability to conduct routine IQ and memory screening.
* Maintaining professionalism in the face of emotive issues, verbal abuse or risk.
* Experience of working in MDT settings and collaborating with multidisciplinary team members.
* Experience in applying clinical psychology in different cultural contexts and multicultural settings.
* Experience in risk assessment and risk/crisis management.


Desirable criteria

* Experience of NHS community mental health settings in secondary and tertiary care.

Knowledge


Essential criteria

* Skills in complex psychological assessment, intervention and management, with sustained concentration.
* Knowledge of theory and practice of specialised psychological assessment and intervention for mental health presentations.
* Strong written and oral communication skills with clients, families, carers and other professionals.
* Knowledge of current developments and policies relevant to mental health services.
* Ability to work under pressure and manage time effectively.
* Proficient IT skills to manage electronic case records.


Desirable criteria

* Knowledge of legislation and NICE guidance for the client group.
* Knowledge of clinical caseload management within a team setting.
* Experience in providing consultation and supervision to other professional and non-professional groups and assistants.


Key skills / abilities

Essential criteria

* Ability to teach and train others using complex multi-media materials for presentations.
* Valid driving licence and ability to drive to different bases.

Desirable criteria

* Ability to identify and apply mechanisms of clinical governance to support and maintain practice in challenging settings.
