Job Description

Join to apply for the Sewerage Technical Advisor - 32397 role at Environment Agency. We look for an urban drainage advisor with sewer hydraulic modelling experience to help shape new regulatory approaches and improve sewerage and water‑quality outcomes across the country.


Key Responsibilities

* Apply sewer hydraulic and modelling expertise to inform guidance and assure programme delivery.
* Lead the development of audit processes for water‑quality investigations carried out under the Storm Overflows Assessment Framework and Environment Act.
* Co‑develop training courses on Urban Pollution Management (UPM), respond to technical queries and coach staff on sewerage and water‑quality investigations.
* Work collaboratively with Environment Agency teams and external organisations, maintaining effective communication with internal and external customers.
* Provide incident role support if chosen, potentially earning additional payment and full training for incident response.


Experience & Skills Required

* A relevant degree (civil engineering, geography or environmental science) or equivalent experience, with evidence of continued professional development.
* Experience of sewer modelling and/or river‑quality impact modelling for UPM studies, including model audits.
* Knowledge of environmental planning and the regulation of water and sewerage companies.
* Excellent organisational skills and ability to coach others.
* Experience of embedding new approaches into business, developing processes through collaborative relationships with dispersed teams.

Applications will be “blind” assessed using your answers to competency questions. Interviews will be held via MS Teams during the week commencing 12th January 2026. If you consent to be recruited onto a reserve list, we will hold your details for 6 months and may offer you an alternative post.


Competencies


Competency 1 – Numerical Modelling and Forecasting

Interpret data to forecast environmental states, including large‑scale trends such as climate change and localised forecasting of pollution, flooding, and water availability. Describe sewer and/or river‑quality impact models you have developed, audit or quality assurance processes followed, problems encountered, and how these were resolved.


Competency 2 – Strategic Environment Planning

Develop, deliver, and implement strategic plans for the sustainable use and protection of the environment. Provide a summary of your technical knowledge and experience from the wastewater sector, and describe how you applied environmental planning to achieve a significant positive impact on water quality.


Competency 3 – Coaches Others

Use a variety of methods (direct instruction, coaching, feedback) to help others develop. Provide an example of how you enhanced a group’s capability within your organisation or externally, and how you measured success.


Competency 4 – Shapes Organisational Approach & Delivery

Inform government policy or design, implement, and support approaches to translate it into cost‑effective operational activity delivering outcomes for people and the environment. Describe a process you have developed and embedded at an organisational level.


Additional Information

The Environment Agency is not part of the UK Civil Service; therefore, you will not be a Crown Servant.
