Salary: £45,000 - 85,000 per year Requirements: We are looking for proven experience leading and line-managing a team of front-end engineers or a cross-functional delivery team. We need strong people management capability and the ability to build high-performing teams. We require strong technical credibility in modern front-end development, including JavaScript, TypeScript, component-based architecture, performance, and testing. We need demonstrable experience leading significant front-end change such as migration, modernisation, replatforming, or major refactoring. We are looking for strong understanding of software quality and testing practices, with experience partnering closely with QA and test roles. We need excellent stakeholder management skills and the ability to communicate trade-offs, progress, and risks clearly to technical and non-technical audiences. We prefer ecommerce or retail experience, especially in high-traffic trading environments. We prefer experience working with third-party engineering partners and external QA providers. We prefer familiarity with experimentation, CRO delivery environments, and performance-focused delivery. Responsibilities: We own delivery outcomes for front-end engineering and QA, including predictable throughput, release readiness, incident and defect ownership, and continuous improvement. We establish and maintain strong engineering ways of working. We identify delivery risks early, remove blockers, and manage dependencies, resourcing, and technical constraints. We balance operational work with roadmap delivery and technical debt reduction to protect site stability and future change velocity. We steer the front-end migration programme end to end from an execution perspective, including sequencing, approach, and delivery governance. We set and maintain front-end standards and patterns across framework usage, TypeScript standards, state management, component structure and reuse, testing strategy, and performance best practices. We document key migration decisions and trade-offs and align stakeholders on the chosen direction. We ensure the team maintains a sustainable architecture direction. We line-manage and support the Test Manager to create and execute effective test strategies, plans, and scripts across releases and change programmes. We ensure robust coverage across exploratory, feature, pre- and post-release, integration, regression, and performance testing. We drive strong defect management, including triage, prioritisation, ownership, and fast resolution of live issues impacting customers and trading. We maintain clear release sign-off processes and communication so stakeholders understand confidence and risk. We question project briefs, shape solutions, and reduce delivery roadblocks. We translate business goals into engineering delivery plans and communicate clearly with non-technical stakeholders. We coordinate with third-party development and QA partners to ensure alignment on standards, quality expectations, and delivery timelines. We build a strong engineering and QA culture focused on ownership, quality, continuous improvement, and collaboration. We set clear expectations, coach performance, develop capability, and support hiring for future platform needs. We create a team structure and operating rhythm that reduces dependency on the Head of Ecommerce for day-to-day technology management.
