Offer description

Company Description
The Oculoplastic service at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust is a busy secondary care unit, that covers a large population (over 600,000) offering acute and elective care, treating a wide range of pathology. It is a dynamic team, well integrated within the Trust, working closely with ENT, Maxillofacial and Dermatology services offering high quality care to its patients. Our multi-disciplinary periocular oncology service draws tertiary referrals from the South East of England and beyond. The Ophthalmology Department itself is substantial, with 18 Consultants, covering all major subspecialties.

Job Description
The Ophthalmology department is offering an Oculoplastic fellowship training opportunity for 1 year, supervised by 3 specialists in this field. It is open to suitable UK and international candidates who have completed their Ophthalmic Training and are considering pursuing a career in Ophthalmology. The fellowship will offer the selected individual a vast array of clinical and surgical skills in order to become a subspecialist in the field of Oculoplastic and Lacrimal surgery. There is good exposure to common orbital disease (thyroid orbitopathy, trauma, orbital inflammation) but there is inadequate volume and variety to be considered an orbital fellowship. The post will be 80-85% clinical, with the remaining time available to undertake research/teaching, delivered over 40 hours each week. The job will include Emergency Eye Care provision and on call cover as part of the Resident doctor on call.

The Fellow will participate actively in the diagnosis, management and follow up of patients under the care of the Consultants. They will be responsible for coordinating the activity of the service and patient management between all 3 Consultants. They will undertake surgery both under supervision and, where appropriate, unsupervised. There is an expectation that they will supervise some of the work of more junior resident doctors as part of his or her training experience.
