We have the opportunity for a Craftsperson (Fitter) within the Major Projects team based at either Midsomer Norton, Bristol or Weston‑Super‑Mare. Reporting to the Team Manager, the Fitter will be working as part of a team to maintain and repair power system components at substations including switchgear, transformers, protection systems and associated equipment operating at voltages up to 132kV.
Candidates are required to have Grade A*-C/4‑9 GCSE in English and Maths or Functional Skills Level qualification in both subjects. Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment.
Main Responsibilities
* Maintenance and repairs of plant and protection systems on the 132kV, 33kV distribution network, including mechanical/electrical fitting.
* Work to set procedures and ensure health & safety requirements are fully met.
* Complete all allocated tasks in a safe and timely manner.
* Willingness to learn and develop knowledge.
* Undertake operational duties on the distribution network, including the receipt of safety documentation relating to substation work activities up to 132kV.
Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will ideally have relevant practical electrical fitting experience at 132kV/33kV substation sites, including electrical/mechanical fitting or wiring experience. Consideration will be given to applicants who do not possess all the skills required to undertake the role at present but have the confidence and ability to reach the necessary standards with appropriate training.
If not already attained, the successful candidate will be required to study for Level 2 City & Guilds 2339 qualification and complete TAR, which includes daily diary completion and a number of tasks and reports as required. You will also receive training for authorisation to switch at 132kV and 33kV, and it is essential that, if appointed to the role, you are committed to achieving this level of authorisation.
You must be able to work on your own initiative as part of a small team, make on the spot decisions as required and work to tight deadlines. A flexible attitude is essential as you may be asked to undertake other duties to assist the team in meeting its objectives. In addition, you will need to be mobile throughout the area as you may be required to undertake standby duties. Depending on experience, you may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.
Please note that where job roles involve working at height and the use of Personal Fall Protection Equipment, there are restrictions on the maximum weight of the individual.
Security and Vetting
This role is subject to a satisfactory Barring Service (DBS) check. Depending on the role, different levels of screening and vetting are required, and some roles require a tri‑annual check.
