Fertility Nurse - 16 Month Fixed Term Contract

The Role
The post‑holder will be one of a group of specialist nurses working within the fertility clinic. Treatments range from IVF/ICSI, ovulation induction, egg donation and sharing, egg retrieval and surgical sperm retrieval.
Full time – 37.5 hours per week, weekends on rotation are required.
The position is available as a 16‑month fixed term contract.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop a satisfactory level of clinical competence in ART skills, e.g., plan and coordinate treatment cycles and undertake specific investigations such as endocrine profiles.
* Assist in the management and support of sub‑fertile couples before, during and after treatment cycles, creating a therapeutic environment to meet individual needs.
* Conduct patient consultations before, during and after treatment cycles.
* Ensure that informed consent is given and the appropriate unit and Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority consent forms are completed, discussing the risks associated with ART and potential use of gametes for research.
* Demonstrate excellent communication skills, providing information and implications counselling to enable couples to make informed choices regarding their treatment.
* Support patients and families in highly stressful situations (e.g., breaking bad news, diagnosis of ectopic or miscarriage, bereavement and anger management), both face‑to‑face and over the telephone.
* Ensure that patients understand the risks of iatrogenic disease such as ovarian hyper‑stimulation, multiple pregnancy and the ethical issues surrounding gamete/embryo research.
* Explain and complete consent forms for the storage and posthumous use of frozen gametes, including implications of separation or divorce.
* Keep accurate records of all patient communication and clinical activity relevant to the treatment, in line with NMC regulations.
* Assist with the collation of data from procedures and transfer it to the records on the computer, satisfying HFEA regulations.
* Coordinate booking of the patient’s treatment cycle, plan drug prescribing and liaise with GPs.
* Explain individualized treatment schedules, potential side effects of drug treatment and demonstration of injection technique.
* Coordinate oocyte retrieval, embryo transfer, intra‑uterine insemination, donor insemination, and provide counselling and support during cycle outcomes.
* Interpret complex clinical information, anticipate potential problems, take action to prevent/minimise issues, and respond to changes promptly and effectively.
* Prepare specialist equipment for procedures, ensuring cleanliness and sterility of all equipment used in IVF‑guided egg retrieval, ultrasound, embryo transfer and intra‑uterine insemination procedures.
* Supervise and assist in the preparation and care of the patient and partner before, during and after procedures.
* Support medical staff with procedures such as transvaginal ultrasound‑guided oocyte retrieval.
* Work within the legal framework of the 1990 Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act and the Care Quality Commission.
* Manage difficult situations with competence, supporting the multidisciplinary team as required.
* Ensure procedures and policies are in place for emergency/crisis management and support for patients, relatives and staff.
* Implement COSHH, infection control, risk management and health and safety according to unit policy.
* Ensure accurate and confidential record‑keeping per Trust and HFEA policy.
* Deal with complaints and grievances in line with the unit’s complaint procedure.
* Support senior nursing staff with pharmacy drug store maintenance and controlled drugs in line with Trust policy.
Experience & Qualifications
* 1st level registration with the National Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
* Interest in women’s health.
* Computer skills.
* Phlebotomy.
* Theatre and recovery skills.
Desirable: Previous experience in fertility or women’s health setting, a degree, teaching/mentoring qualification, and sonography experience.
Salary
Competitive, depending on experience.
Working Hours
37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Weekends required at a 1:4 rotation.

Holiday Entitlement
27 days plus bank holidays (pro rata).
