Job Overview
A highly motivated and dynamic person to lead and manage both the Surgical Admissions Unit (SAU) and Surgical Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC).

This is a full-time position, covering Monday – Friday with the occasional weekend to cover the staffing rota for the directorate.

Main duties of the job

Clear and effective leadership

* Participation in assessment, planning and delivery of direct patient care across SAU and

SDEC.

* Full accountability and responsibility for shift management.
* Safe management of an admissions environment, ensuring safe and effective practice at

all times.

* Collaborative working with the Clinical Matron, General Manager and speciality clinical leads to ensure delivery of high calibre, evidence-based patient care.
* Encouragement and development of a flexible work force through the efficient use of facilities, manpower and other resources.
* Initiation, promotion and maintaining high standards of practice within the team in line with departmental requirements.
* Provision of clinical expertise both on shift and when representing the department.
* Management of resources effectively and within budget parameters.
* Actively participating in audit.
* Identification of areas of clinical need and to assist in changing practice to meet service requirements.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
Demonstrate leadership and excellent interpersonal skills

* Demonstrate initiative and appropriate decision making
* Establish and maintain professional and therapeutic relationships with patients, visitors and work colleagues
* Motivate team members, negotiate change with members of the department and multidisciplinary team, teach and inform others (professional colleagues and other multidisciplinary team members) in consultation with the Ward Manager and Clinical Matron
* Effective and appropriate communication
* Make appropriate use of knowledge and clinical ability to recognise changes in a patient's physical/mental condition, inform relevant others of identified problems/needs and facilitate solutions to problems/needs
* Organise and plan work activities of self and others
* Use computer/information technology within the day-to-day activity of the workplace as part of communication, ordering and retrieval of investigations and results, and in order to organise and present information
* Additional nursing skills relevant to clinical area
* Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills
* Be a competent practitioner and supervise the action of others effectively

Supervisory and Management Responsibilities:

* Development of speciality specific clinical protocols and guidelines
* Monitor and control the use of resources and make recommendations for expenditure in order to ensure value for money and meet Unit and corporate objectives
* Be aware of the financial position of the department, and discuss any areas of concern with the Clinical Matron /Head of Nursing
* Act as designated signatory to order resources and authorise financial payments, e.g. unsocial hours payments
* Provide day-to-day facilitation of appropriate skill mix to meet the needs of the service. Work within Trust protocols for utilisation of temporary staffing as required on a daily basis
* Assist in staff recruitment in line with the recruitment and selection process in line with Trust policy
* Identify and minimise any conflict in your immediate team and the wider team and facilitate good interpersonal communications

Manage your individual team using Trust Personnel policies and procedures, including sickness and absence monitoring, appraisals, capability and disciplinary and mandatory training

* Undertake a lead role within the wider team as delegated to you by the Ward manager or Matron (eg Health & Safety, Education etc)

Knowledge skill

Essential criteria

* relevant specialty expereince in a vairety of Surgical wards/ units/ theatres
* Significant experience working as a band 6 / senior sister role
* Degree BSC Hons Adult nursing
* Significant post registration experience
* Leadership and management experience
* Leadership qualification or working towards

Desirable criteria

* Post graduate certificate MSc
* Research and Audit
* Acute surgical care or emergency care experience

* Experience of Change Management
