An exciting opportunity is offered for enthusiastic and motivated senior trainees (ST4 or above) with an interest in leadership, management and quality improvement to join Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust under the Royal College of Physicians Chief Registrars in Acute & General Medicine scheme. The role is available for the 2025/2026 academic year.
The role provides senior trainees with 50% protected time to develop skills and confidence in leadership, management and quality improvement. Learning gained from the Royal College of Physicians' bespoke development programme will be applied in a supported environment that encourages autonomy, flexibility and support to develop projects addressing key local challenges and priorities such as service improvement, engagement, education, workforce and sustainability.

The Chief Registrar will be mentored by a senior clinical leader within the organisation and gain unique insight into NHS leadership and management processes, as well as a deeper knowledge of NHS structures and stakeholders.
The Chief Registrar will be expected to attend modules delivered as part of the Royal College of Physicians' bespoke development programme, covering change management, team culture and development, quality improvement, leadership, influencing and personal resilience.
Job responsibilities
* Provide a bridge between senior clinical leaders, managers and the wider trainee workforce to improve communication, engagement and morale.
* Lead service improvement initiatives such as redesigning pathways, implementing new technology and establishing new services to enhance patient flow and outcomes.
* Enhance the quality of clinical and non‑clinical education and training activities, and mentor other trainees to engage in quality improvement.
* Participate in workforce planning and improve deployment of trainees to meet service needs and boost morale.
* Improve efficiency and reduce waste within services.
* Collaborate across teams and boundaries to engage stakeholders in quality improvement and influence change.
Involvement in and exposure to senior management and organisational decision‑making. The chief registrar should attend departmental and divisional management meetings to understand management and the wider socio‑political and economic influences on healthcare delivery. Where appropriate, they should attend Board meetings and lead any sessions on service development, improvement and transformation for which they have direct responsibility.
Half (50%) of the role is protected time for the Chief Registrar; the remaining 50% is clinical practice. On‑call commitments may vary and are determined locally.
Person Specification
Qualifications and Training
* Full registration with the General Medical Council
* Fit to practice
* Not already hold a CCT or be within 12 months (ideally not within 18 months) of completing training on the intended start date
* Hold a national training number
Knowledge and Skills
* Knowledge of evidence‑based practice
Clinical/Experience
* Understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues
* Evidence of active involvement in quality improvement, audit, research or other activity focusing on patient safety, clinical improvement and innovation
Personal Attributes
* Evidence of feedback on teaching approaches
