This is a physical role and requires moving bulky items, full wheelie bins, and handling sacks, so it will definitely keep you fit and active!
We are seeking applications for this full time positions. We offer on the job training and instruction on the various vehicles and plant we operate in our fleet as well as our in cab technology, so your experience as a driver will be utilised and your skills and knowledge base will increase.
Whilst it would be advantageous if you hold a full Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC card with at least 2 years remaining on it) and a valid Digital Tachograph Card, this is not necessarily a barrier for you applying for this role. We can assist with helping you obtain a CPC and digital tachograph driver’s card if you do not already have one and training to retain this card will be ongoing and provided by the Council with a relevant payment for undertaking such training.
You will be responsible for doing the daily checks on the vehicles including the cleanliness of the interior and exterior of the vehicles.
About the role
Reporting to the Supervisors / Managers you will be required to start and finish at Oakwood House in Marsh Barton, Car parking on site is free but limited. and we have good safe bike facilities.
You will have regular working hours starting at 6am, collecting various wastes types on a mainly ‘Group Team Task & Finish’ basis, including on our food waste rounds.
Hours are on average, 37 hours per week, working 5 days out of 7 with a requirement to work on catch up Saturdays after Bank Holidays, Good Friday and Christmas including adverse weather disruptions with the availability of further overtime throughout the year.
As a waste operative driver you will have the responsibility for your own safety, crew safety and the safety of members of the public on a daily basis.
If you like, working outside and being part of a team, then this is the job for you, full PPE will be supplied for this all-weather role and all PPE must be worn.

Waste, Recycling and Fleet is a very busy service that reaches over 61,500 household in the city. We also provide services to many businesses within the city as well. The service conduct over 120.000 collections a week, with our professional drivers playing a crucial role not only through their driving skills, navigating Exeter’s busy roads, but also being the key to ensuring that our waste operative loaders operate safely.
