Job Description
We are looking for environmental professionals with experience of landfill management/regulation to join our teams that regulate permitted waste and industrial installations.
We welcome external applications from people with relevant experience from within the landfill industry.
Responsibilities
* Assess permit compliance and engineering activities at a range of landfill sites.
* Make complex assessments of an operator's ability to protect the environment, prevent pollution and optimise resources.
* Set conditions under which a site may continue to operate and enforce the law should they fail to comply.
* Use influencing and negotiating skills to secure best practice, engaging with partners, community groups and the public, often in relation to high‑profile sites.
* Provide pre‑application advice to prospective applicants and existing permit holders on permit and variation applications, liaising with permitting officers to ensure permits contain appropriate conditions, improvement requirements and emission limits.
* Regulate own portfolio of sites, identifying areas of non‑compliance and improvement opportunities through inspections and audits.
* Undertake training to hold a warrant under S108 of the Environment Act 1995 and take a proportionate response to non‑compliance, including enforcement activities.
* Respond to incidents – a central part of the role that requires participation and may attract an additional payment.
Experience & Skills
* Experience working in the landfill sector and/or a landfill engineering qualification or hydrological background.
* Demonstrated experience in, or capability to:
*
o Assess CQA and Validation reports on landfill design.
o Review Hydrological Risk Assessments.
o Undertake landfill gas technical reviews, inspections and audits.
o Aftercare of closed landfills.
o Slope stability risk assessments.
o Be familiar with UK Environmental Legislation.
o Assess construction of lagoons, including site sensitivity and engineering requirements.
o Be familiar with environmental management systems, auditing, and root cause analysis.
o Interpret environmental monitoring and performance data.
* Be used to managing multiple demands and delivering outcomes independently.
* Take initiative and practice a continuous improvement approach.
* Hold a degree or equivalent in a scientific, environmental or engineering discipline.
* Possibly be a member or have chartered status of a relevant professional organisation.
Qualifications
* Degree or equivalent in a scientific, environmental or engineering discipline.
* Relevant professional membership or chartered status (preferred).
* Full UK driving licence – a vehicle will be provided for business travel.
Location & Working Arrangements
The post will be based in one of our two Landfill Installations Teams that work flexibly together across Yorkshire.
All flexible working patterns are welcomed and can be discussed at interview. Hybrid working is available with regular face‑to‑face meetings and training sessions.
