Health Care Support Worker, Acute Medical Unit

AMU and ward 4 are looking for an enthusiastic health care support worker who wants to make a difference.

The Acute Medical Unit receives medical admissions from the Emergency Department. It is an extremely busy unit comprising of 20 beds with 8 assessment/triage trolleys. We also have a 28 bedded general medical ward attached to AMU (ward 4). We are one team and you will be allocated to work in both areas.

Exceptional team working is essential to this role, along with a warm and friendly bedside manner and the ability to work in a high-pressure area. Previous experience in a hospital/acute setting is beneficial but we accept applications from those without hospital care experience.


Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will be responsible for assisting the qualified nurses to meet the basic nursing needs of the patients in their care, as well as working from their own initiative and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced working environment.

You will need to have outstanding communication skills - you will be part of a team of fellow HCSW's, physician's assistants, qualified nurses and nurse practitioners, junior Doctors and consultants. You will be expected to communicate with these members of the team along with liaising with our ward clerks on admissions, transfers and discharges.

Your day to day routine will consist of but is not limited to: meeting patients hygiene and toileting needs, serving meals and assisting patients to eat and drink, taking and recording of vital observations, maintaining good levels of stock and PPE, assisting with wound dressings, disposing of hazardous waste safely and correctly and documenting in patients notes.

You will be expected to have a good standard of literacy and numeracy, due to being required to document about the patients skin and the taking and recording of vital signs.

There will be the opportunity to further develop with training and education, we enrol all of our HCSW's on to basic life support training.

The Health Board currently operate a number of different shift systems. The most common are a 12.5 hour shift, inclusive of either one 30 minute or two 30-minute unpaid breaks. These shift patterns are subject to review and the Health Board reserves the right to change working arrangements. Welsh Skills Desirable: This post is advertised as Welsh Desirable. This doesnt mean essential; whilst the candidate doesn't need to have skills in Welsh, we'll consider it an advantage when short-listing and selecting candidates. This isnt fluency, just Speaking & Listening skills at Level 3 (equivalent to CEFR B2) or above. Level 3 means basic conversations with patients about their everyday health. Person Specification


Qualifications

* Good level of education
* NVQ level 2 or equivalent
* Welsh Language Speaking/listening Skills (Level 3 and above/B2


Knowledge

* Good understanding of role
* Able to demonstrate what role entails


Experience

* Previous experience of Health care setting
* Hospital experience


Skills

* Working with acutely ill patients
* Skills in caring for patients in a ward environment
