Our client is a high technology security detection business in the UK and the US providing a wide range of radiation detection solutions for our customers. Reporting to the Hardware Engineering Manager, the Mechanical Design Engineer will lead all aspects of the mechanical design, development and testing of both new and existing products through full life cycle, from concept through to production release. Work collaboratively with other engineers and colleagues both in the UK and US to ensure product design and manufacturability meet client needs.
Responsibilities
Take ownership of the physical mechanical design process of all our products. Ensure that our process is fit for purpose and meets standard design guidelines and policy.
Lead the team as the design authority to design components for radiation detection systems as per product/customer requirements.
Use CAD software (Solidworks) to create and modify parts designed for CNC machining, Injection Molding, Sheet Metal Bending, and 3D printing.
Lead the team to build models and make prototypes to validate and test the design.
Provide lean solutions to challenges that arise during the product development lifecycle and direct the implementation of those solutions.
Lead and participate in peer design reviews to ensure best design practices are followed with direct reports and the wider engineering team.
Support and direct the team to produce specifications for products and the choice of raw materials and components to be used in production, such as injection molded, extruded, machined, sheet metal, etc.
Work collaboratively with electrical engineering, software engineering, Physics and Sales to ensure new product designs will function as per customer requirements
Supports Tool/Design meetings for all new product introductions; inform production/program teams on all parts, assembly, timing, and cost issues.
Locate and utilise external experts when required, with specific design issues. Make good judgements and decisions about issues, involving other team members as necessary to ensure skills required are available when needed.
Develop and maintain lean mechanical Design engineering process.
Delegate responsibilities and supervise the work of direct reports providing guidance, coaching and motivation to drive maximum performance. Regularly meet with direct reports, and support them with a variety of management, technical and implementation matters when required. Act as mentor to direct reports.
Manage the employee life cycle, focusing on supporting recruitment initiatives, learning and development, and continuous improvement. Act as a mentor embodying Symetrica values.
