Nuclear Safety Case Engineering Graduate Programme

Join to apply for the Nuclear Safety Case Engineering Graduate Programme role at targetjobs UK

What will you do on the programme?

As a Graduate Nuclear Safety Case Engineer at Babcock, you’ll help ensure some of the UK’s most critical nuclear operations remain safe and secure. Every project we deliver depends on robust safety cases, and you’ll contribute to the assessments, documentation, and expert advice that make complex work possible.

You’ll get involved in identifying and analysing potential hazards, failures, and faults – and help develop solutions to prevent them. That could mean supporting hazard identification studies, contributing to periodic safety reviews, or providing technical input into assessments that keep our facilities operating safely. You’ll learn how to produce and maintain safety documentation that shows risks are As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP), working alongside experienced safety case authors, human factors specialists, radiation protection advisors, and engineers from across the business.

Your experience will depend on your location. At HM Naval Base Clyde, you could help develop safety justifications for nuclear submarine operations. At Cavendish Nuclear, you might support the decommissioning of legacy sites or contribute to clean energy projects. At Rosyth, you’ll be part of the team delivering safe and responsible submarine dismantling.

Wherever you’re based, you’ll be making a real impact – helping to protect people, safeguard the environment, and shape the future of nuclear safety.

How is the programme structured?

This two-year programme is designed to give you a broad understanding of safety case development. During this time, you’ll complete placements that expose you to a wide range of work, including safety case authoring, hazard analysis, compliance reviews, and environmental safety.

By the end of the programme, you’ll have built a solid foundation in hazard identification, risk assessment, and safety case development – ready to take the next step in your career.

How do we develop and support you?

From day one, you’ll receive structured support, personalised training, and dedicated mentorship to help you excel throughout your programme and beyond.

You’ll join our Graduate Development Programme, featuring expert-led masterclasses on communication, personal branding, resilience, and wellbeing.

We also offer tailored technical training and one-to-one mentoring to support your journey toward Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status, including full guidance and fee coverage.

What rewards and benefits will you get?

We want you to feel supported, valued and excited about what’s ahead. That’s why we offer a comprehensive package designed to support your development, wellbeing and life outside of work as well.

In addition to a minimum starting salary of £35,000, you’ll benefit from:

* A minimum of 25 days of holiday plus bank holidays, with agile working options subject to discussion with your manager
* Generous pension and employee share schemes
* Adaptable benefits, including cycle to work scheme, discounts
* Wellbeing support, covering mental, physical, financial, and social wellbeing, with services like our Employee Assistance Programme, digital GP service, and health checks.

You’ll also have the chance to get involved in our STEM outreach activities and volunteering opportunities.

What do you need to apply?

* You’ll need a BSc or BEng (Hons) degree in an Engineering, Science or Maths subject. Relevant disciplines include Nuclear Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil or Chemical Process.
* A postgraduate qualification such as an MSc or MEng in Nuclear Science would be particularly valuable.
* Many of our graduate programmes are subject to Security Clearance and Trade Control restrictions which mean that your place of birth, nationality, citizenship, or residency you hold or have held may impact which programmes you are eligible for. For this programme, you must be able to achieve Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) and Security Check (SC) clearance.

Where will you be based?

Places on our Safety Case and Hazard Management programme for Autumn 2026 are available at Cavendish Nuclear, in our Marine sector in Rosyth, and at HM Naval Base Clyde in Scotland.

While you’ll join a specific business area and location, placements at different sites across the UK are possible. Agile working is supported, but you’ll be expected to work on-site multiple times a week. We encourage adaptability and openness to relocation throughout the programme and will consider your personal circumstances when arranging placements.

Not sure which business area to apply for?

* Curious about the UK's nuclear future? At Cavendish Nuclear, you’ll find diverse placement opportunities across the UK (including Warrington and other key sites), working on projects that protect our nation, secure our energy supply, and support the journey to net zero.
* Passionate about supporting submarines and nuclear operations? At HMNB Clyde (Scotland), your work will help ensure the safe operation of nuclear facilities that support the Vanguard and Astute-class submarines.
* Want to play a key role in the submarine dismantling programme? Rosyth (Scotland) is home to one of the UK’s largest and most advanced marine facilities. Here, you’ll help deliver safe and responsible dismantling solutions for retired submarines, focusing on radioactive waste management and environmental safety.

Ready to apply?

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and the programme may close early if we receive a high volume of interest. To give yourself the best chance of being considered, we recommend submitting your application and completing any required online assessments as soon as possible.
