Job Brief

You will be responsible for customers vehicles, troubleshooting issues and repair work, aiming to maximum reliability and functionality. You will set the example, take the lead and coach others are required.

An excellent MOT Tester / Vehicle Technician has good eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity. You will be diligent, impartial and have excellent attention to detail. You will be well-versed in complex mechanical or electronical systems of vehicles and have excellent problem-solving abilities. You must also be a good communicator to provide advice to customers, as required.

You must be able to work with various machines and tools as well as follow all safety precautions. It will be expected for you to share your experience, skills and train others over time.

Adhering to the DVSA MOT Guidelines and processes is always a must. You will diligently read and digest all DVSA notices.

Responsibilities

* Carry out MOT testing of vehicles and complete necessary paperwork in line with required regulations

* Only test vehicles you are authorised to inspect

* Ensure your MOT tester login details are always secure

* Always ensure you log off the MOT Testing Service when leaving the computer

* Always follow trained MOT Routines to establish good practice and habits

* Whilst conducting an MOT you must not leave the test station

* Ensure the MOT Testing tools / equipment are present, stored correctly and in good working order

* Ensure you complete the prescribed annual DVSA Training to remain an Authorised Tester

* You will ensure your Authenticator App or Tester Card is always secure

* Report any issues, abandoned tests, aborted tests or known accidental errors immediately to the AEDM

* Report any driving convictions or other convictions immediately to the AEDM

* Service, repair and fault diagnostics work on all vehicles

* Ensure job sheets are followed, counter signed and completed and returned to the office

* Inspect vehicle engines and mechanical / electrical components to diagnose issues accurately

* Use initiative, think ahead and request parts to ensure vehicles are ready as promptly as possible

* Maintain knowledge of technical developments by attending training courses as required by Management

* Carry out general vehicle maintenance and repair

* Utilise your technical knowledge

* Test, diagnose, and resolve faults

* Make suggestions to improve processes and implement them

* Inspect components for wear and tear

* Repair and replace parts – such as tyres, suspension, brakes

* Run diagnostic tests to discover functionality issues

* Conduct repairs aiming for maximum reliability

* Troubleshoot reported problems and resolve them in a timely manner

* Perform thorough maintenance on Company machinery, equipment and systems

* Use and apply lubricants to mechanical components as required & supplied

* Replenish fluids and components of engines according to manufacturer's specifications

* Undertake other duties as reasonably requested

* MOT preparation and inspections work on vehicles

* Report any damage or shortage of parts / tools to request replacement part or order spares and/or consumables, tools

* Observe relevant health and safety procedures, including the use of protective clothing and equipment

* Observe Manual Handling Guidelines & Regulations

* Maintain working area, tools and equipment in a safe and clean condition

* Maintain a professional approach on social media when representing the business

* Be an ambassador for the businesses

Additional Supervisory Duties:

* Co-ordinate where needed and in the absence of the Directors the workload / job allocations for the day.

* Pro-actively assist the Directors in the daily running of the administrative office:

o Answering of telephone enquiries

o Calling customers to advise on their booking / completion of work

o Entering accurate and complete information into the work diary

o Completing customer invoices and taking payments

o Ordering parts as required to ensure work completes in a timely manner

* Assist in ensuring all work areas are in a well-maintained, presentable and clean state.

Aside from these additional responsibilities, you are required to maintain the correct MOT testing standards, these are not to be jeopardised. Use delegation skills to instruct other team members to assist where necessary.

Requirements and skills

* Proven experience as Vehicle Technician

* Excellent knowledge of machinery and hydraulic, electrical and other systems and their components

* Aptitude in using various hand tools (ratchets, screwdrivers, hammers etc.) and precision measurement tools (e.g. multi meters, verniers, torque wrenches)

* Ability to follow established procedures and practices and read instruction, diagrams, workshop manuals.

* A strong commitment to all health and safety guidelines

* Very good communication skills

* A problem-solving ability

* Very good physical strength and stamina

* Possess high levels of integrity and drive to succeed

* Be enthusiastic, respectful and friendly to guests and colleagues

* Completed a recognised Automotive Qualification

* Willing to commit to continuous professional development through attending courses as appropriate
