Vickerstock are proud to be working in partnership with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council to recruit a Temporary Environmental Health Officer (P01 - Facilities & Environment) to cover a 13-week sickness absence. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Environmental Health professional to join a busy team within the Sustainability and Environment section, focusing on food safety and related public health matters.
The Role
Reporting to the Senior Environmental Health Officer, you will play a key role in ensuring the Council complies with statutory and legislative requirements, delivering high-quality services that protect public health. This will include:
1. Carrying out visits, inspections, and investigations across the Council District
2. Undertaking routine inspections of food premises in line with legislative and departmental standards
3. Investigating complaints and responding to public health enquiries
4. Conducting sampling programmes, interpreting results, and taking enforcement action where required
5. Preparing professional reports, licences, permits, and approvals
6. Liaising with internal teams, elected members, statutory agencies, and community groups
7. Providing technical advice on planning applications and environmental impacts
8. Representing the Council at meetings and, where necessary, in court proceedings
9. Supporting training initiatives and mentoring junior staff or students on placement
Essential Criteria
10. A recognised degree or equivalent in Environmental Health
11. Full current driving licence and access to transport (essential car user allowance applies)
12. Demonstrable experience in food safety inspections and enforcement
13. Knowledge of relevant legislation, codes of practice, and statutory guidance

14. Location: Based at Greenbank Offices, Newry, with travel across the district (possible base in Downpatrick)
15. Rate: £20.58 per hour PAYE
16. Hours: 36 per week (Monday-Friday)
17. Contract: 13 weeks
