Opportunity
We have a permanent Engineer opportunity to join our Consulting Rail team. The role is based at one of our shared office locations in Birmingham, Derby, York, Bristol, Manchester or Cardiff.
Key Projects
As an appointed Design Partner on some of the UK’s most significant and complex rail infrastructure projects, including Wales & Borders. We support major programmes such as Northern Powerhouse Rail, Eastern Routes Partnership, North West & Central Framework, Core Valley Lines, Trans‑Pennine Route Upgrade and Cardiff Crossrail.
Role
As a Civil Engineer you will support the Senior Engineer in design and delivery of rail design schemes and guide and mentor junior team members.
Responsibilities
* Deliver technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working unsupervised and supervising junior staff.
* Prepare and check designs, calculations, drawings and documentation for scheme deliverables, ensuring quality, cost and programme targets.
* Advise client and supplier representatives, attend progress meetings and respond to queries.
* Manage a small, locally based, single-discipline technical team and deliver workload.
* Contribute to bid preparation and work-winning functions.
* Work on site on a visiting basis or in a full-time temporary role, including out of hours.
* Assume people‑manager responsibilities when required.
Qualifications
* Degree or Masters in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
* Relevant experience in rail engineering and ability to work commercially and customer‑focused, meeting programme targets and generating income.
* Capability to work independently and supervise less experienced staff.
* Good understanding of DMRB, national standards, best‑practice guidance and local standards.
* Knowledge of CDM regulations and their relevance to rail design.
* Ability to prepare briefs for fee quotes when required.
* Deliver on time, within budget and to required quality.
* Keep up to date with industry best practice and apply it within the team.
