Job title: Senior Construction and Engineering Underwriter
Salary: £95,000
Location: London
PURPOSE OF ROLE
Lawes Consulting Group is proud to be working with a leading global (Re)insurer specialising in Construction & Engineering risks. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Underwriter to join a respected team, playing a key role in assessing and managing complex risks while supporting international growth and collaboration.
RESPONSIBILITIES
* Review and underwrite new business based on risk assessment and market data
* Negotiate terms with brokers and clients to optimise profitability
* Ensure all underwriting decisions follow internal policies and procedures
* Work closely with global teams to align processes and maintain documentation
* Support junior underwriters through knowledge sharing and peer reviews
* Uphold compliance standards and contribute to regulatory requirements
* Strengthen and maintain broker and client relationships
* Contribute to business planning and new product development
* Collaborate with internal teams (Actuarial, Legal, Compliance, etc.)
* Promote brand presence through marketing and relationship-building efforts
EXPERIENCE
* 10+ years in underwriting or related insurance experience, preferably in Construction & Engineering
* Progressing toward or holding CII qualification
* Strong understanding of underwriting practices and market dynamics
DAY-TO-DAY
* Assess incoming proposals and issue underwriting decisions
* Communicate with brokers to negotiate terms and manage expectations
* Maintain accurate documentation and risk files
* Attend meetings with cross-functional and international teams
* Monitor portfolio performance and support business development
* Assist with training and mentoring colleagues
* Stay updated on market trends and compliance requirements
SKILLS
* Strong analytical and decision-making skills
* Excellent written and verbal communication
* High attention to detail and accuracy
* Proficient in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
* Team player with strong interpersonal skills
* Able to prioritise, multitask, and perform under pressure
* Proactive, self-driven, and customer-focused
