We are currently looking to appoint a suitably experienced and skilled Band 5 SCBU Staff Nurse to join our friendly team.

As a SCBU Nurse, you will need to have relevant experience at Band 5 level in neonatal/paediatric nursing. You must be confident, compassionate and clinically credible. You will also act as a mentor who is competent in the supervision of student midwives and nurses and the junior nursing team. You will have excellent interpersonal and management skills and be committed to the delivery of excellent neonatal care. You will support the Ward Manager in promoting a positive patient experience, unit's initiatives and Achieving Excellence.

As a registered, accountable and autonomous nurse to act in the best interests of your patients at all times and take personal responsibility for your actions and decisions. To be responsible for patient assessment, planning of care, implementing and supervising safe and compassionate care, and evaluating the effectiveness of care. As an NMC registrant, facilitate learning and development of others. You will demonstrate leadership qualities and be open, transparent and trustworthy. As a Trust employee, act with integrity and uphold the values and beliefs of the Trust and the NMC Code of Conduct. Promote BLISS Baby Charter and the UNICEF Baby Friendly Standards and support the practice of family centred care.


Main duties of the job

To provide a high standard of individualised care to sick and premature infants and their family/carers and to partake in assessing, developing, implementing and evaluating programmes of care. To supervise junior staff and students as requested. To assist in the management and organisation of the nursing service in the clinical area including the teaching and management of more junior staff or those in training.

Deliver high standard quality care and provide family centred care and holistic approach. Partake in assessing, developing, implementing and evaluating patient care. Maintain clinical skills and acquire new skills as they become part of the role. Observe patient's condition and report any abnormalities to the Senior Sister/Nurse in Charge or where appropriate, medical practitioner. Maintain standards as set for each area of practice. Ensure and demonstrate that National Charter Standards are met. Maintain good record keeping. Communicate effectively with patients, their relatives and colleagues. Respect privacy, dignity, religious and cultural beliefs. To support the Ward Manager and provide clinical leadership to ensure high quality service and the delivery of high standard of care are provided. To be individually motivated, self-aware, socially skilled and able to work across professional and organisational boundaries.


Job responsibilities

Ensure a safe approach to care is given following the guidelines of the Trust. Work closely with other health care professionals in the MDT. Report any untoward incidents or complaints to the senior nurse/midwife on duty at that time. Undertake specific roles/areas of responsibility as requested by the Senior Sister. To ensure that task is performed equitably, effectively, in accordance with the nurses individual skills, development needs and within clear parameters of responsibility.

To assist in the collection of information to aid decision-making within the ward/department. To help the Senior Sister with investigation reports/ datex and in the provision of high quality, research-based nursing care that is patient and family-focussed.

Act as a role model to junior nurses and students rotating to the area. To undertake a recognised assessor training and subsequently participate in the formal assessment of learner nurses. Continually update professional knowledge, identifying own training needs to maintain professional standards. Participate in orientation of new staff. Participate in in-service education programmes. Have a working knowledge of all equipment used. In conjunction with the European Institute of Health and Medical Science, ensuring that the training needs of all learner groups are met. Assess the progress of learners. Assist in the record of learning outcomes for students. Book and attend mandatory training.

Special Responsibilities: To abide by the NMC Code of Professional Conduct for the Nurse and ensure safe practice. As a registered nurse, you are personally accountable for your practice. In caring for patients and clients you must: Respect the patient or client as an individual. Obtain consent before you give any treatment or care. Protect confidential information. Co‑operate with others in the team. Maintain your professional knowledge and competence. Be trustworthy. Act to identify and minimise risk to patients and clients.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Registered Nurse Part 8 or 15
* Holds current NMC registration and must be able to demonstrate that you have knowledge of your professional code of conduct and guidance issued by your professional body and that you adhere to this.
* Demonstrates professional updating of knowledge in past one/two years
* Post qualification or equivalent experience in an acute setting - Foundations of Neonatal Special and Transitional Care, High Dependency and Intensive care Course (ENB 405)
* Neonatal Advanced Life Support Course (NALS) within the last 2 years
* Evidence of UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) Training, Embedding Baby Friendly Standards


Skills, Knowledge and Experience

* Current employment at Band 5 or above within acute NHS setting.
* Evidence of post qualifying and continuing professional development - minimum 6 months experience in neonatal unit/SCBU
* Evidence of Child Protection Issues and Safeguarding Policies and Procedures
* Skills in using IT, including office applications, clinical record systems (e.g. BadgerNet/Cerner/OASIS) and database/statistical applications e.g. Excel
* Evidence of advanced skills in practice i.e. iv additives, blood gases, central lines, use of tecotherm
