The Portland Facility Our Portland facility comprises two warehouse sites: one totaling 75,000 square feet in warehouse capacity and an additional state-of-the-art 144,000 square feet facility with a portside presence for discharging and loading vessels using our own stevedoring equipment, including a new 380 metric tonne hybrid crane. Our network of global port terminals means we can provide a guaranteed service to our consumers. Our people operate all aspects throughout, which allows us to accurately manage the quality, quantity, and delivery of our commodities.


The Role: Shovel Loader Operator As a Shovel Loader Operator, you will play a crucial role in safely and efficiently moving and managing bulk grain. You will maintain product integrity and housekeeping and strictly comply with Safe Systems of Work and site safety routines. This is a versatile role that encompasses both machine operation and manual tasks to complete processes end-to-end.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Operate a loading shovel safely and efficiently for shed movements, stockpiles, and loading support.
2. Manage product integrity: ensuring segregation, contamination prevention, and correct stock handling.
3. Be capable of operating and utilizing a 380mt counterweight, hydraulic crane and the 600mt/hr intake system incorporating a moving shuttle conveyor system, both located at the facility.
4. Maintain housekeeping and dust control; keep walkways/routes and work areas safe and tidy.
5. Complete shift paperwork and handover logs accurately and on time.
6. Deliver safety routines: active participation in VCOM, SLAMs, reporting, and interventions.
7. Complete QR pre-use checks; raise defects immediately, isolate unsafe plant, and escalate to supervision/maintenance.

What We Are Looking For (Essential Skills & Experience):

8. Proven shovel operating experience in a bulk/industrial environment.
9. Strong safety behaviors; confident to stop work if unsafe.
10. Shift flexibility (nights/weekends during 24/7 operations).
11. Willingness and physical ability to perform manual work alongside machine operation.
12. Basic digital competence (for QR checks/forms) coupled with good communication and teamwork skills.
13. Possession of a full UK driving license.
14. Good spoken English and interpersonal skills to communicate clearly with drivers, customers, and contractors (safety-critical).



Working Hours: Shifts are 8 hours in length plus an hour of unpaid breaks. Normal working hours will be Monday to Friday, 06:00-20:00. When discharging large vessels, the facility operates 24/7, and you will be required to work on a flexible basis during this time, which will include some weekend and night work. Overtime is rewarded at time and a half for weekend work and double time for night work.
