Overview
United Lincolnshire Hospitals are looking to recruit a Consultant Cardiologist with a special interest in Cardiac Imaging. We are searching for 2 dynamic and enthusiastic individuals to join the team to support and expand the cardiac imaging service for the Trust. The post-holder will be based at the Lincolnshire Heart Centre but may be expected to provide some services from other hospital sites within the Trust. This post entails a 1:12 in-patient consultant of the week cover based at Pilgrim Hospital Boston, and a 1:16 consultant of the week cover based at CCU, Lincoln Hospital and a 1:8 pan-trust non-interventional cardiology on-call.
Pan-Trust cardiology at ULHT provides comprehensive cardiac services for the county for a population of around 750,000. This includes both a busy 24/7 PPCI and PCI service and a well-established Cardiac MRI service and Cardiac CT service. The successful candidates would join 8 Interventional Cardiology, 8 non-interventional Cardiology colleagues, an Associate Specialist, Staff Cardiologist and 3 Nurse Consultants in Cardiology across the Trust. There is a nurse-led in-patient heart failure service on both the Lincoln and Pilgrim hospital sites and good links to the community heart failure team.
Cardiac MRI is provided currently at the Grantham site performing over 1800 MRI scans per year and the site is one of 6 nationally accredited sited by BSCMR. A second MRI scanner has been installed at the Lincoln site with cardiac compatibility and the service in the Lincoln scanner commenced November 2025. The post-holder is expected to support the MRI reporting service at both Lincoln and Grantham.
There is a well-established cardiac CT service performing approximately 2000 CT scans per year pan-trust. Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) are at Skegness, Grantham and Lincoln are capable of supporting cardiac CT and there is another CDC in development at Boston with similar capabilities. We provide six Rapid Access Angina clinics with same-day Cardiac CT across these sites each week. Along with 8 other cardiac CT reporters, the post-holder is expected to contribute to this service using a community / trust-wide thin client based reporting system.
Echocardiography is provided on all 3 acute sites with transoesophageal echo undertaken on the Pilgrim and Lincoln sites. There is a Consultant sonographer in addition to Cardiology Consultants. Exercise bike echo and dobutamine stress echo are provided.
A DPD scan service for cardiac amyloid is expected to commence in 2026. Nuclear Myocardial perfusion imaging is undertaken on the Lincoln site and there is a weekly mobile PET CT scan service.
This is post therefore expected to support the expansion of the cardiac MRI and CT service. An interest in echocardiography would be useful to support the expansion of structural interventions that is likely to happen over the next several years.
