Embedded Software Manager
The Embedded Software Manager will work within the Engineering department based at our site in Hunmanby or Mansfield. They will be required to perform a hands‑on role within the matrixed engineering team to line manage a subset of the engineering team in the delivery of new product developments and the maintenance of existing products.
Key Responsibilities
* Line management of a segment of DSE engineering team, including day‑to‑day task management, 1:1 appraisal, goal setting, personal development plans, holiday approval, and sickness review.
* Collaborate with Project Managers to review technical content of projects, define and estimate task durations, and ensure project plans are technically correct and on schedule.
* Allocate engineering work tasks to the reporting segment using JIRA or a similar tool.
* Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, ensuring high‑standard output.
* Ensure engineers have necessary skills, knowledge, and tools; address gaps with engineering management.
* At project inception, provide product and project cost estimates, feasibility studies, and ensure high‑level technical requirements are captured.
* Act as a technical decision maker, contributing to platform and architecture strategy.
* Assist in developing in‑house tools and processes; support the wider company with technical questions.
* Maintain engineering systems, revision and variant control systems, issue management systems.
* Align on technology, processes, designs, and testing with other supervisors and engineering managers.
* Review department KPIs to ensure targets are met.
* Depending on team size, work hands‑on as an engineer in the relevant discipline.
* Identify and mitigate risks related to functional safety levels.
* Communicate effectively with technical engineers and management.
* Works at both the North Yorkshire and Sutton-in-Ashfield sites, with some remote and hybrid working available.

Requirements
* Expertise in C/C++ for embedded systems.
* Understanding of Linux operating systems and application development, including Yocto.
* Knowledge of the power generation industry and/or control and automation solutions.
* Experience managing multi‑discipline product development teams.
* Familiarity with software development life cycles, tools, and processes.
* Knowledge of functional safety standards such as ISO 26262, 61508 or IEC 60730.
* Good understanding of cyber security principles and technologies for embedded systems.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Strong ability to break down work and estimate tasks, committed to driving projects to completion.
* Experience with stage‑gated (waterfall) / agile development approaches.
* Risk identification and mitigation techniques.
* Comfortable communicating with both technical engineers and management.
* Proficient problem‑solving and troubleshooting capabilities.
* Enthusiastic and optimistic attitude.
* 7 + years of experience as a senior engineer or team leader with direct reports.
* 7 + years of embedded software engineering experience, including RTOS and Linux projects.
* Background in electronics, typically a degree.
