Job overview

One post is a one-year fixed term contract starting in August. It will be based at the Great Western Hospital Swindon (GWH). This is an exciting and unique opportunity for a resident doctor with an interest in education. The post will be 50% in Acute Medicine and 50% Post Graduate Medical Education. The post will also include the opportunity to be involved in the exciting field of simulation.

This post would typically suit a ST3 – ST5 level doctor at the time of appointment, such as those wishing to undertake further training in medical education as part of an Out of Programme Experience (OOPE) from their Specialist training programme. Opportunity to undertake PG Certification in Clinical Education.

To assist the Director Medical Education and relevant clinical specialty in their educational strategy to design, develop, deliver & evaluate Postgraduate training programmes which encompass essential clinical skills, simulation training, quality improvement work and trainee support including International Medical Graduates.


Main duties of the job

1. Provision of clinical education for postgraduate clinical resident doctors including simulation (where relevant) and clinical skills for resident doctors with a specific role supporting the International Medical Graduate consultant lead.

2. To take part in on-going research projects, or undertake original work under supervision.

3. Bedside and classroom teaching of postgraduate resident doctors.

4. Coordination of post graduate resident doctors’ teaching opportunities.

5. Supporting Clinical Skills Teaching and ward-based assessment to post graduate resident doctors.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* Evaluation of teaching in conjunction with the relevant administrator.
* Undertaking any training that is identified as necessary for the candidate to teach effectively.
* Promote and deliver simulation as an effective educational tool.
* Provide a source of support, training and specialist advice to IMG trainees as and when required.
* Lead on the provision of mentorship to incoming IMG as well as giving informal support to help integration socially with their peers / colleagues.

Qualifications

* GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice
* Eligible to work at ST3- ST5 at the time of appointment
* Post graduate courses or qualifications in medical education


Experience

* Substantive NHS experience in Acute Medicine
* Experience of teaching postgraduate medical resident doctors on training programmes
* Experience of the ARCP process
* Experience of engaging with quality assessment of postgraduate medical training programmes such as the GMC trainee survey and National Educational and Training Survey
* Experience of Quality Improvement and audit
* Experience of using e-portfolios / appraisal systems for evidence collection
* Representing the views and needs resident doctors

Candidates are responsible for covering the cost of their own DBS check if required: £21.50 for a Standard DBS check, recoverable from the first pay, or £49.50 for an Enhanced DBS check, divided and recoverable over the initial two pay periods. Payment for DBS checks for bank posts must be settled prior to commencement. Apprentices are exempt from DBS payment.
