Job Summary
Pathology is the department that studies and understands how illness and diseases develop and the impact they have on people. Across University Hospital Birmingham (UHB), the pathology laboratories support patient care through diagnosis, treatment and research through their well‑accredited laboratories. The Cellular Pathology department is seeking a Medical Secretary Supervisor to join our team. In this role you will provide comprehensive secretarial support, working closely with colleagues and the office manager to positively impact patient care. The role is site‑specific (Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham or Birmingham Heartlands Hospital), but occasional cross‑site work may be required. Previous secretarial experience is desirable, along with strong organisational and communication skills and a high level of attention to detail. Sponsorship is offered, but this role is not eligible for the UK Skilled Worker visa route due to the salary threshold. Job Types: Full‑time, Permanent. Salary: £27,485 – £30,162 per year.
Job Duties
We are looking for a self‑motivated individual who can work to strict deadlines with excellent communication, prioritisation and typing skills. Knowledge of medical terminology and previous secretarial experience is desirable. The successful candidate will handle confidential and sensitive information, interacting with people at all levels. Strong teamwork and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential. Duties include typing reports, handling email and telephone queries, coordinating MDT meetings, managing post, and liaising with medical and laboratory colleagues.

Person Specification – Essential Qualifications
* Good general education (e.g., GCSE English and Maths A‑C). GCSE Level 9‑4.
* Business Administration NVQ Level 3 or equivalent experience in a clerical environment.
* AMSPar Certificate or equivalent qualification and knowledge of medical terminology.
* Working knowledge of medical terminology.
