Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join our CAMHS team in Hemel Hempstead for one year. This position is available because the current consultant psychiatrist has taken on a clinical director role for the Provider collaborative and will require 6 PAs to backfill their clinical duties.

Hemel Hempstead is part of the West CAMHS team, which also includes the St Albans CAMHS team. The successful candidate will be based in Hemel Hempstead.

This is a newly created post to meet the increasing demand on our service.

The successful candidate will join the existing two Consultant Psychiatrists in St Albans and will backfill for another psychiatrist in Hemel Hempstead. The team includes 2 higher trainees (ST4-6), 2 core psychiatry trainees, a GP trainee, 2 SAS doctors, and a multidisciplinary team comprising psychotherapists, psychologists, family therapists, social workers, clinical nurse specialists, and independent prescribers.


Main duties of the job

1. Work closely with the multidisciplinary team and other agencies in health and social care as appropriate.
2. Assess young people's mental states, formulate diagnoses, advise on treatment, and monitor risks alongside the MDT.
3. Manage a psychiatric caseload, including assessments and reviews.
4. Conduct referral meetings and case reviews as required.
5. Provide clinical leadership and collaborate with the Senior Leadership Team to enhance partnerships with other agencies for clinical and quality outcomes.
6. Participate in medical staff meetings within Hertfordshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust as necessary.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. Participate in regular Audit and Quality Assurance programmes to maintain high standards, including POMH audits.
2. Provide advice, support, and consultancy to minimise risk in various settings.
3. Coordinate with the local acute paediatric service for liaison and consultation.
4. Offer case-based discussion and teaching to the MDT.
5. Handle administrative duties related to patient care, including reliable documentation and communication with GPs and other professionals.
6. Accurately record clinical activity on electronic records.
7. Engage in pathway and CAMHS clinical governance, contributing to pathway development and patient transitions between Tier 4 services.
8. Manage, appraise, and supervise junior medical staff, including assessing competencies.
9. Support the High-Risk Pathway and clinical nurse specialists.
10. Participate in annual appraisals for consultants.


Person specification


Qualifications

* MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
* Higher qualification in psychiatry (MRCPsych or equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists).
* Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research, or management.
* Relevant higher degree (MD, PhD, MSc) or additional clinical qualifications.


Eligibility

* GMC registration with a license to practice at the time of appointment.
* CCST or equivalent in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, or eligible for CCST, or on the GMC Specialist Register, or within six months of achieving CCT/CESR at interview.
* Section 12/Approved Clinician approval.
* In good standing with GMC regarding warnings or conditions on practice.


Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience

* Experience with the full range of clinical responsibilities expected of a CAMHS consultant.
* Experience working collaboratively with social care and other agencies.
* Experience working with service users with complex needs within CAMHS.
* Excellent clinical skills with a bio-psycho-social perspective and broad medical knowledge.
* Strong oral and written communication skills.
* Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
* Decision-making based on evidence and experience, including team contributions.
* Wide range of specialist/sub-specialist experience relevant to NHS or comparable services.
* Excellent knowledge of CAMHS medicine.


Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning

* Ability to deliver undergraduate/postgraduate teaching and training.
* Participation in CPD activities.
* Experience in research or service evaluation.
* Ability to appraise clinical evidence.
* Active participation in clinical audits.
* Valid driving license and access to a car (unless disabled under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995).
* Experience in planning and delivering teaching/training.
* Reflective practice regarding CPD.
* Experience in clinical research or service evaluation.
* Evidence of achievements in education, research, audit, and service improvement.
* Leadership in clinical audits leading to service change.
* Experience organizing psychotherapy training programs for psychiatry trainees.

This post requires a DBS check due to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975.
