Senior Clinician / Professor in Small Animal Surgery

University of Glasgow – School of Biodiversity, One Health and Veterinary Medicine

Are you a world-class small animal surgeon looking for your next challenge? Do you thrive on advancing surgical excellence, mentoring the next generation, and shaping the future of veterinary medicine?

We’re seeking an exceptional Diplomate-level surgeon to join us as Senior Clinician or Professor in Small Animal Surgery, based at our award-winning Small Animal Hospital on the beautiful Garscube Estate in Glasgow. This is a unique opportunity for a highly skilled, visionary surgeon with academic ambitions, with the potential to evolve into a professorial leadership role.

Why join us?

Our busy multidisciplinary referral hospital is one of the largest and most advanced in the UK, staffed by a close-knit team of specialists across surgery, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, anaesthesia, diagnostic imaging and ophthalmology. With state-of-the-art facilities (including 1.5T MRI, CT, linear accelerator, digital radiography and four fully equipped theatres) and a genuine One Hospital ethos, we deliver exceptional clinical care while supporting each other’s growth and success.

Glasgow offers the best of both worlds: a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with world-class culture, food and nightlife, and just 30 minutes away, the breathtaking landscapes of Loch Lomond and the West of Scotland.

About the role

You’ll play a leading role in our surgical service, working alongside a talented, supportive team.

As a Senior Clinician (Grade 9), you will have responsibility for:

* Clinical leadership: Deliver and develop a high-quality surgical referral service, including participation in the out-of-thours rota. Support innovation in diagnosis, treatment, and novel surgical techniques, contributing to hospital quality assurance and service development, including opportunities for income generation.
* Teaching & mentorship: Inspire and guide undergraduates, interns, residents, and postgraduate clinical scholars by delivering high-quality clinical teaching, supporting their clinical duties, research projects, Board exam preparation, and professional development.
* Research & scholarship: Lead and contribute to high-quality clinical research, including collaborative trials and external partnerships, with dedicated off-clinic time. Publish in high-quality journals and present at national/international events and seminars.
* Collaboration: Work collaboratively across the multidisciplinary team and across Garscube & Gilmorehill campuses, ensuring the best outcomes for patients, students, and colleagues.

At Professor level (Grade 10), you will build on the responsibilities above and also:

* Provide academic, clinical and strategic leadership, shaping the future vision of our surgery service, hospital and School.
* Lead an internationally recognised research programme, with a sustained track record of high-impact publications and competitive grant funding.
* Act as a mentor and role model, supporting the development and career progression of junior academics, clinical scholars, and colleagues.
* Play a major role in the strategic expansion of the School, building national and international partnerships across divisions, institutes and external organisations, and enhancing our global profile.

About you

We’re looking for someone who brings:

* An RCVS-registrable veterinary medicine degree
* A postgraduate Diploma in Small Animal Surgery (ECVS, ACVS or RCVS)
* Extensive experience in small animal surgery with a track record of clinical research and publication
* Proven ability to inspire, teach and mentor at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
* A collaborative spirit, strong leadership skills, and the vision to shape the future of our surgical service

At Professor level, you’ll also bring:

* An international reputation in small animal surgery research
* Significant experience in academic leadership and strategy
* A proven record of mentoring, postgraduate supervision, and clinical programme development

What we offer

We believe that taking care of you is just as important as the work you do. As part of Team UofG, you can expect:

* Salary Grade 9/10 of £70,000to £100,000 with additional market supplement
* Relocation support where appropriate
* Generous OOH allowance
* 41 days’ annual leave (including public holidays)
