Job overview

In this substantive, full time role, you will work an established ENT team.

The speciality doctor role is based in Brighton, Worthing and Haywards Heath.

The ENT department covers Brighton, Worthing and QVH, a population of 750,000. In addition for Head and Neck cancer, Eastbourne and Hastings patients are treated in Brighton (400,000).

All types of ENT treatment are undertaken including advanced otology & skull base surgery. Advanced audiology facilities are present on the RSCH site.

The main OPD base is the RSCH with elective otology lists operations within Hurstwood Park, Haywards Heath and Royal Alexandra Childrens Hospital. The ENT ward is shared with Neurosciences. The Childrens’ Hospital is also on the RSCH site. At PRH there are OPD facilities and day surgery facilities.

Worthing has a 5 day ENT department with OPD, Audiology and inpatient/day case facilities.

The Worthing department benefits from a newly refurbished out-patients department shared with MFU.

Main duties of the job

The clinical duties of the post include the following:

· Independent Operating sessions

· Outpatient clinic

· Registrar of the week

· Teaching and training of juniors

The post holder accepts that they will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation, where practicable, with their colleagues, both senior and junior. While it has been agreed between the professions that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptions and you should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.

Experience/Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. •Basic medical degree
2. •Postgraduate qualification or appropriate specialist qualification
3. •Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
4. •Four years post-graduation, with two years in the relevant specialty.

Desirable criteria

5. •Higher Degree
6. •MSc, MCh, MD or PhD

Clinical Skills & Experience

Essential criteria

7. •Experience in running ENT operating lists independently as 1st operating surgeon
8. •Understanding of clinical risk management

Desirable criteria

9. •Tonsillectomy, Panendoscopy + Biopsy, FESS, Grommets, Septoplasty, Adenoidectomy

Knowledge

10. •Breadth of experience in and outside specialty

Organisation & Planning

11. •Experience and ability to work in multi-professional teams
12. •Understanding of: NHS / Clinical governance / Resource constraints
