Healthcare Assistant band 3 – Ward 6c

Location: Liverpool

Employment type: Permanent (Full-time)


Job Summary

Under the supervision of a registered nurse, assisting the Ward/Department team in providing the highest possible standard of care for patients and their families/carers. The post holder will undertake a range of tasks and duties as delegated by a registered nurse.


Responsibilities

* Participate in all aspects of patient care with particular attention to personal hygiene and grooming.
* Provision of patients' toileting needs, ensuring privacy and dignity is maintained.
* Support patients in managing incontinence and promotion of continence.
* Record patients' fluid intake and output using fluid balance charts.
* Prepare and serve patients' meals, drinks and snacks; assist/feeding as necessary.
* Record patients' dietary intake when indicated in the patients plan of care.
* Enable patients to maintain/improve mobility by use of exercise and mobility appliances.
* Assist in the prevention of pressure sore development as directed by the registered nurse.
* Carry out movement and handling within safe practice guidelines and patient manual handling plan.
* Obtain specimens for ward or laboratory testing.
* Removal of cannula, catheters and nasogastric tubes.
* Undertake dressing of non-complex wounds (as per competencies and plan of care).
* Prepare and maintain environments for clinical treatments and investigations.
* Prepare patients for treatments, investigations or procedures including offering support, answering questions and assisting in recovery.
* Collection of blood products from laboratory as requested.
* Chaperone and escort patients to clinical departments and other hospitals for investigations.
* Assist Registered Nurse in performing last offices.
* General and clinical observations of patients; report to Registered Nursing Staff.
* Record vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiration, oxygen saturation monitoring, peak flow, blood glucose monitoring and venepuncture upon direction of the registered nurse.
* Document in patient nursing records; ensure entry countersigned by the responsible Registered Nurse.
* Initiate Basic Life Support techniques as appropriate, assisting the registered nurse in prolonged resuscitation situations.
* Contribute to the development of Essence of Care and benchmarking.
* Provide a verbal handover of patient care under direct supervision of the registered nurse.
* Ensure due regard to customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients and carers.
* Promote effective communication within the multi-disciplinary team and overcome difficulties.
* Contribute to management of aggressive and abusive behaviour.
* Clean and prepare beds, linens, maintain a safe environment, safe disposal of clinical waste and sharps per Trust policy.
* Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment; report incidents as per Trust policy.
* Attend to visitors and patient needs, especially those distressed or bereaved.
* Handle patient property in accordance with Trust policy.
* Obtain demographic details and social history to assist in admission process.
* Provide support and assistance to new and junior members of staff.
* Undertake clerical duties in support of Ward Clerk: reception/telephone, basic computer skills, obtaining case notes/x-rays, filing, acting as messenger, complete maintenance repair forms, monitor stock levels and requisition forms.
* Cover duties of absent colleagues.
* Follow all policies and procedures of the organisation.


Qualifications

* 18 months experience working as a healthcare assistant
* NVQ L3 qualification
