To assist the scientific staff in the effective provision of Histology Pathology Services. To receive and sort specimens, check data accuracy and information given. Participate in the preparation of specimens and staining of slides, prepare and maintain stocks and solutions and assist in maintaining report and slide files. To perform patient data entry and Multi-Disciplinary Meeting administration. The post holder will work under the day –to –day supervision of the Lead MLA.
Main duties of the job
Specimen reception and sorting to include collection of samples and their return if inappropriately labelled or request forms are incomplete.
Support of Consultant Histopathologists and Scientific Staff during specimen dissection.
Preparation and staining of samples/blocks/slides, under supervision. This will entail the making and using of solutions and operation of laboratory equipment following set protocols and procedures.
Supervised cleaning, sterilisation/disinfection of work areas and equipment.
Supervised disposal of specimens, stains, solutions, glass and confidential waste in accordance with department policy and Health and Safety regulations.
Assist with the labelling, filing and storage of specimens and data files.
Partake in the answering of telephone enquiries in accordance with departmental policy. Liaise with other healthcare professionals using the laboratory service.
Assist with general office duties – sorting, photocopying, filing, production and distribution of reports and preparation for MDTs.
Participate in departmental quality management including the review of SOPs.
Maintenance of daily quality assurance logs.

Essential criteria
1. Literacy and numeracy to at least GCSE or equivalent level evidenced
