The Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading seeks an outstanding Postdoctoral Research Scientist to investigate the most predictable components of the atmosphere and enhance their representation in sub-seasonal prediction. The project employs a novel approach to diagnosing global analysis and S2S forecast data, based on the theory of large-scale atmospheric wave activity. We aim to identify mode-like structures that dominate observed variability, with each mode characterized by an intrinsic frequency derived from its spatial structure. The research explores the connection between these properties, atmospheric predictability, and model performance in sub-seasonal forecasts.

This position is funded by the AFESP programme, a £30 million, 15-year initiative by the University of Reading in partnership with ECMWF, the UK Met Office, and the National Centre for Atmospheric Science. The programme addresses long-term and high-risk research challenges in Earth System prediction, contributing to the goal of predicting the Earth System up to the sub-seasonal range (more info).

Responsibilities include:

* Conducting research on atmospheric dynamics, modal properties, and model diagnosis to improve sub-seasonal prediction.
* Applying theory to develop numerical diagnostics for analyzing re-analysis and S2S forecast data from ECMWF and the Met Office.
* Performing numerical experiments with ECMWF and Met Office models, collaborating with their teams.
* Participating in and organizing project meetings.
* Reporting research findings through publications, presentations, and workshops.
* Collaborating with AFESP partners, including travel as needed.

The university values diversity and inclusion, supports gender equality (Athena SWAN), race equality, and LGBT+ rights, and is a Level 2 Disability Confident Employer. Flexible working arrangements are encouraged and will be considered.
