Are you an experienced Mechanical & Piping Engineer with a passion for delivering complex decommissioning projects safely and efficiently? This is an exceptional opportunity to play a key technical role in a major UK engineering programme, leading the planning, design, and execution of mechanical and piping decommissioning packages on a high-profile site.
You’ll work at the heart of a multidisciplinary programme, ensuring the safe removal, isolation, and disposal of critical mechanical systems, while driving compliance, innovation, and engineering excellence throughout the project lifecycle.
The Role
As Decommissioning Package Manager - Mechanical & Piping Engineering, you’ll take ownership of engineering deliverables across discovery, planning, pre‑construction, and construction phases. You’ll provide technical leadership, develop decommissioning strategies, and ensure safe, compliant execution of mechanical and piping system removal.
You’ll collaborate closely with project teams, contractors, and stakeholders, managing interfaces, mitigating risks, and ensuring engineering solutions meet regulatory, safety, and operational requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Technical Delivery
* Develop detailed decommissioning plans, schemes of work, and engineering work packages
* Lead site surveys to identify mechanical and piping systems for removal or isolation
* Produce engineering designs for deplanting, dismantling, and system isolation
* Perform risk assessments and implement hazard mitigation strategies
* Ensure compliance with UK regulations, engineering standards, and safety requirements
Package & Construction Management
* Oversee disconnection, removal, and disposal of mechanical and piping equipment
* Coordinate with contractors, designers, and specialist teams
* Support readiness reviews, construction planning, and execution
* Conduct final inspections and verification of decommissioning outcomes
* Ensure compliant handling, recycling, and disposal of waste and hazardous materials
Stakeholder & Programme Coordination
* Engage with stakeholders to define requirements and manage interfaces
* Support programme planning, cost estimation, and scheduling
* Provide technical guidance and solutions to overcome delivery challenges
* Present engineering deliverables and support project reviews
Leadership & Knowledge Transfer
* Mentor engineers and contribute to capability development
* Lead knowledge sharing and lessons‑learned sessions
* Support continuous improvement in decommissioning practices
What We’re Looking For
Essential
* Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
* Chartered Engineer status or equivalent experience
* Proven experience in mechanical and piping systems engineering
* Strong experience delivering decommissioning, demolition, or complex facility projects
* Knowledge of relevant design codes (e.g., BS EN 13480, B31.1, CDM Regulations)
* Experience managing engineering packages within large, multidisciplinary programmes
* Strong stakeholder engagement and technical leadership skills
Desirable
* Experience working in nuclear or highly regulated environments
* Knowledge of temporary works (BS5975) and pressure systems
* Familiarity with design tools such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA, or ENOVIA
* Experience supporting construction and contractor coordination
