Job Summary

This full‑time (37.5 hours per week) role combines university study at Newcastle University with placement days at Sunderland Talking Therapies. Successful completion of the course and PWP registration will move pay from Band 4 to Band 5. An interview will be held on 6 and 7 July 2026 at Monkwearmouth Hospital.


Responsibilities

* Provide CBT‑based self‑help interventions to adults with anxiety and depression.
* Carry out triage screening assessments and make onward referrals.
* Gain experience in low‑intensity modalities, including guided self‑help (telephone, online and face‑to‑face), psycho‑educational courses, and computerised CBT.
* Liaise with external agencies and services to promote Sunderland Talking Therapies.
* Balance a high clinical caseload with the academic components of the PWP course (Post Graduate Certificate in Low Intensity Psychological Therapies).
* Attend university and self‑study days as required by the National Low Intensity curriculum.
* Participate in service development projects and further training once qualified, such as the PWP supervisor’s course, LTC training and leadership training.


Person Specification

Essential Experience

* Experience of working clinically with adults who have common mental health problems.

Desirable Experience

* Experience within a primary care setting.
* Experience managing an own clinical caseload.
* Evidence of communicating with people from diverse backgrounds and using an interpreter.

Essential Skills and Competencies

* Computer literate.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including on the telephone.
* Ability to build rapport with service users.

Desirable Skills and Competencies

* Strong communication with diverse populations and interpreter use.
* Leadership and team‑working skills.

Essential Knowledge

* Understanding of common mental health problems and their impact on the whole person.
* Understanding the importance of building good working relationships within a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable Knowledge

* Understanding of evidence‑based interventions and their application.
* Understanding of clinical risk assessment within clinical care.

Essential Qualifications

* Evidence of ability to study successfully at undergraduate Year 1 level or equivalent.

Desirable Qualifications

* Undergraduate degree in Psychology or another health and care related discipline.

Essential Other Requirements

* Willingness and ability to work clinically on evenings where required by the service.
* Willingness and ability to travel to university and to various locations for patient appointments.
