SRG is seeking a temporary Institute Manager for a university in London.
The Institute Manager collaborates closely with the Institute Director, Faculty of Brain Sciences Operations Director, and other Central Professional Services departments.
The role involves overseeing the Institute's operational support services, including finance, IT, HR, Biological and Histology Services, Health & Safety, laboratory, and buildings management.
Duties and Responsibilities
Main functions include:
1. Leading professional services, technical, and administrative functions to support research, education, and enterprise.
2. Managing the Institute's budget and resources efficiently.
3. Supporting the Institute Director in strategic implementation and overseeing operational performance.
4. Coordinating with business partners and service leads to meet Institute needs.
5. Ensuring compliance with regulations and policies.
Operational Management and Services
1. Leading the professional services and technical teams.
2. Providing high-quality operational services across all sites.
3. Ensuring effective service delivery through close liaison with relevant departments.
4. Managing resources, including finance, staffing, and facilities.
5. Maintaining governance structures and monitoring performance.
6. Reviewing policies for operational improvement.
7. Promoting internal communication and staff engagement.
8. Overseeing Biological Services Facility activities.
9. Supporting the Establishment Certificate Holder.
10. Managing buildings and facilities at two sites.
11. Overseeing estates projects with the Laboratory and Biological Services Managers.
Strategic Development and Planning
1. Advising on strategic objectives and priorities.
2. Developing and implementing the Institute's strategy and policies.
3. Coordinating planning cycles and business cases.
4. Leading budgeting cycles and resource allocation.
5. Overseeing financial reporting and compliance.
Finance and Resource Management
1. Ensuring policy compliance.
2. Supporting research funding and financial management.
3. Managing financial signatory responsibilities.
4. Overseeing grant and contract management.
5. Monitoring expenditure and payments.
6. Ensuring compliance with funder and governance requirements.
Human Resources and Staff Management
1. Supporting HR services for recruitment, induction, and retention.
2. Managing and developing staff teams.
3. Conducting appraisals and professional development.
4. Promoting diversity and equality initiatives.
5. Ensuring HR procedures comply with legislation.
6. Training in HR panel procedures and investigations.
Experience and Qualifications
1. Senior management experience in higher education administration.
2. Proven leadership in support services and standards.
3. Effective staff management and employment advising.
4. Strong budget management and financial control skills.
5. Knowledge of research funding and governance.
6. Educational background to degree level, preferably PhD in a scientific discipline.
7. Project and change management experience.
8. Understanding of research agreements and contracts.
9. Experience working with NHS and clinical partners.
10. Knowledge of higher education policies and confidentiality handling.
